TV-Series
Description
Dr. Kyudai Garaki is a central antagonist in My Hero Academia, also known by the aliases Daruma Ujiko and Dr. Tsubasa. He is an elderly man of short stature, completely bald with a large, bushy mustache and distinctive goggles. His appearance is largely unchanged over many decades due to the nature of his Quirk.

Born approximately 120 years before the main story, Garaki has always been a scientist dedicated to the study of Quirks. Around seventy years prior to the series' present, he proposed the Paranormal Singularity Theory, which predicted that as generations passed, Quirks would become so powerful and uncontrollable that they would lead to societal collapse. This theory was publicly mocked and rejected by the scientific community, leading to his ostracization. In his isolation, he was approached by All For One, the shadowy ruler of the underworld, who not only believed in the theory but also offered him patronage. In gratitude for this acceptance, Garaki gave his original Life Force Quirk to All For One while retaining a copy for himself, cementing a lifelong bond of loyalty.

Personality wise, Garaki is eccentric, deranged, and profoundly loyal, viewing All For One as a god-like figure. He is incredibly prideful of his scientific creations, referring to the Nomu as his children and the High-End models as his masterpieces. Despite his cruel and unethical experiments, he is not entirely emotionless, expressing genuine sadness at the destruction of his Nomu and sincere gratitude towards All For One. However, he is also cowardly when directly threatened, prone to panic and exaggerated reactions when his plans are jeopardized. He is overly cautious and secretive about his identity, preferring to communicate electronically to maintain his anonymity. His public persona is that of a whimsical and philanthropic doctor, a stark contrast to his hidden villainy.

Garaki's primary motivation is the fulfillment of his Paranormal Singularity Theory and the success of All For One's grand design. He dedicated his incredibly long life to serving All For One, providing the scientific and medical expertise necessary to consolidate power. This included finding and preparing a worthy successor in Tomura Shigaraki. His loyalty eventually transferred to Shigaraki, whom he helped transform into the ultimate vessel of power, admitting that he had only continued living for the boy's sake.

His role in the story is that of the primary scientific mastermind behind the villains' operations. He is the creator of the Nomu, bio-engineered beings made from human corpses and implanted with multiple Quirks to serve as near-unstoppable soldiers. He also created Kurogiri by reanimating the corpse of the pro hero Oboro Shirakumo, a former friend of Eraser Head and Present Mic. Furthermore, Garaki managed to reverse-engineer the Quirk-Destroying Bullets, allowing him to mass-produce them without needing the original source, Eri. Most significantly, he perfected the process of transferring and duplicating Quirks, enabling him to implant a copy of the All For One Quirk into Tomura Shigaraki and modify Shigaraki's body to withstand its immense power.

Garaki's key relationships are central to his character. His decades-long partnership with All For One is one of genuine friendship and absolute fealty. He is initially skeptical of Tomura Shigaraki, viewing him as an inexperienced and unproven successor, but after Tomura proves his worth by taming Gigantomachia and defeating the Meta Liberation Army, Garaki pledges his full and enthusiastic support. He has a utilitarian view of his Nomu, valuing them as his creations. He also has a history with several other characters, including being the doctor who diagnosed a young Izuku Midoriya as Quirkless, and treating a young Toya Todoroki (who would become Dabi) after a near-fatal accident, an event he later noted with surprise at Dabi's survival.

Throughout the series, Garaki remains a shadowy figure until the Paranormal Liberation War arc, where his secret laboratory at Jaku General Hospital is raided by the heroes. Although he manages to complete Shigaraki's transformation, Garaki is ultimately captured and taken into custody. Even in prison, the legacy of his work continues to pose a major threat.

Garaki possesses a genius-level intellect, making him an expert in Quirk biology, genetics, and medical technology. He has demonstrated the ability to duplicate Quirks, transplant them, and create entirely new, composite beings. His own Quirk is a copy of Life Force, which grants him an extended lifespan of over a century and maintains a somewhat youthful appearance for his age, but at the cost of gradually reducing his physical mobility. If his Quirk were to be erased, his body would rapidly age. Despite his frail physical state, he relies entirely on his Nomu creations for protection.
