TV-Series
Description
Kinoko Komori, who operates under the hero name Shemage, is a female student in Class 1-B of U.A. High School’s Hero Course. Hailing from Gunma Prefecture, she is among the shortest students in her class, standing at 152 centimeters tall. Her birthday is December 2. Physically, Komori is distinguished by her shoulder-length brown bob haircut, with long bangs that often obscure her eyes. When visible, her pupils have a unique cross-sliced pattern reminiscent of a shiitake mushroom cap, a subtle nod to her fungal abilities.

At first glance, Komori gives the impression of being quiet, reserved, and perhaps even sullen. However, this initial perception quickly gives way to her true personality, which is remarkably cheerful, talkative, and mischievous. She has a playful nature and a love for lighthearted pranks. This is most evident in her speech, as she habitually peppers her sentences with puns and words related to mushrooms, making her dialogue distinctive and whimsical. Her outward demeanor contrasts sharply with her conduct in battle, where she displays a pragmatic and fierce side. She shows a willingness to use her powers to their fullest, even employing techniques she personally considers unsightly or cruel, though she often does so with a sense of apology or regret, revealing an inner conflict between her kind nature and the necessities of combat. Komori aspires to become an idol-style hero, a dream reflected in her love for Gothic Lolita fashion and her interest in performance and makeup artistry.

Komori's role in the story expands significantly beyond her initial minor appearances. During the U.A. Sports Festival, she finishes the obstacle course in thirty-fourth place, and her team is eliminated in the cavalry battle. She is also present during the training camp attack, where she is placed in critical condition by the villain Mustard. Her most prominent display of ability occurs during the Joint Training Battle between Class A and Class B. In the second match, she is pitted against a team from Class 1-A, including Fumikage Tokoyami and Toru Hagakure. Here, she proves to be a formidable opponent. She uses her spores to cover the battlefield and her opponents' bodies with mushrooms, effectively negating Hagakure's invisibility. As her ultimate technique, she performs what she calls her lung attack, growing mushrooms inside Tokoyami's windpipe. This incapacitates him almost instantly and secures a victory for her team, demonstrating the terrifying potential of her Quirk. Later, during the Paranormal Liberation War arc, her large-scale area control abilities are highly valued, and she is deployed to the front lines at the Gunga Mountain Villa to suppress hordes of villains. In the final war against All For One, she continues to fight, though her effectiveness is hampered by the intense flames of the villain Dabi, which burn her airborne spores.

Her key relationships are primarily within her own class. She works seamlessly with her teammates, such as Itsuka Kendo and Manga Fukidashi, showing good tactical coordination. She shares a notable dynamic with Shihai Kuroiro, a classmate whose Quirk allows him to merge into darkness; her mushroom-covered battlefields provide ideal cover for his movements. This partnership eventually deepens, as it is revealed that eight years after the main storyline, Komori and Kuroiro have become a couple and are in a romantic relationship. She also shares a courteous, if initially tense, relationship with Fumikage Tokoyami after their battle, apologizing for her harsh tactic and later bonding with him over a shared admiration for the Pro Hero Hawks.

Over the course of the series, Komori shows clear development. She begins as a seemingly shy and unassuming student but gradually gains confidence, particularly in her abilities as a hero. By the time of the joint training battles, she is enthusiastic and eager to execute her part of a plan. Her development culminates in the epilogue, where she has successfully graduated from U.A. High School and become a licensed Pro Hero, achieving her goal.

Komori's notable ability is her Quirk, simply named Mushroom. This power allows her to release a vast array of different spores from her body. When these spores come into contact with a sufficiently humid surface, they rapidly grow into full-sized mushrooms. She can cause mushrooms to sprout on walls, the ground, enemy equipment, and even directly on people's bodies, covering them to restrict movement. Her mastery extends to cultivating specific types of fungi, including poisonous or irritating varieties. Her ultimate and most dangerous technique involves growing a type of mushroom directly inside an opponent's respiratory tract, causing choking and rapid asphyxiation. While highly effective, the effects of her mushrooms are not permanent, as they naturally disappear after two to three hours. Her Quirk has clear limitations. It requires a humid environment to be effective, and she often carries two spray bottles, called Shroom-Shooters, one for water and one for spores, to create favorable conditions. The widespread nature of her spores also makes it difficult to avoid affecting her allies, requiring them to be pre-treated with an antifungal or sterilizing agent. Her physical combat skills are noted to be low, making her a specialist whose strength lies in tactical area denial and control rather than direct confrontation.
