Description
Grandfather, also known as Alphonse Frankenstein, is Victor Frankenstein's father and Emily's paternal grandfather. He lived with his son initially but moved to a separate cottage after vehemently disapproving of Victor's unnatural experiments to create life, objecting on ethical grounds due to deep concerns about moral and existential dangers.

A wise, elderly man, he suffers from blindness. This physical condition shapes his perception, allowing him to judge others solely by character and actions. When the Creature, later named "Franken" by Emily, finds his isolated cabin, Grandfather forges an unexpected bond with the misunderstood being. His inability to see the Creature's form enables him to recognize its innate desire for companionship, leading to genuine friendship.

Grandfather provides emotional refuge and guidance to both Franken and Emily, fostering their compassionate relationship. He imparts philosophical and spiritual lessons to the Creature, including concepts of divinity and existential purpose. During a catastrophic forest fire, Franken rescues him, though they fail to save Victor's wife Elizabeth. Afterwards, Grandfather clarifies Franken's innocence to Emily, who mistakenly blamed the Creature for her mother's death and her friend Philip's accidental demise. His testimony about the fire prompts Emily to seek reconciliation with Franken.

Following the deaths of Victor and Franken, Grandfather assumes guardianship of the traumatized Emily. They relocate to his cottage, where he provides stability and care as they rebuild their lives. His presence emphasizes empathy and moral integrity, positioning him as the narrative's ethical anchor amid fear and prejudice.
