Description
Kozue Ayuhara, known as Monica elsewhere, transfers to Fujimi Academy as a second-year student. Relocating from Tokyo to recover from an unspecified illness that ended her prior sports involvement, she initially befriends a delinquent group. This causes friction with the existing volleyball team, leading Kozue to form her own team and challenge the club. Her team's narrow victory results in delinquent members joining the club and Kozue becoming captain.

She displays extraordinary volleyball skills and leadership, quickly rising within the school team. Her potential attracts coach Shunsuke Hongō, who employs rigorous, Spartan-like training methods. Despite his stern demeanor, Coach Hongō deeply cares for his students and supports Kozue's growth. Her journey involves interpersonal challenges, including a rivalry with the team's original star player, Yumi Katsuragi, and a complex friendship with talented but initially selfish teammate Midori Hayakawa. Midori eventually becomes Kozue's closest ally after resolving their conflicts.

Kozue faces increasingly competitive environments, encountering rivals like the Yagisawa sisters from Jidoin High School, known for their three-person attack, and Mihara Yumiko from Misawa High School, who utilizes a powerful spike developed through machine-assisted training. Her skills and determination lead to selection for Japan's national team, the "Best Twelve." There, she confronts additional challenges, including hostility from teammates like Michiru Sanjō, who harbors personal trauma related to volleyball. Kozue also competes internationally, facing opponents such as Shellenina from the Soviet Union and Cathy and Virginia from the American team during the Junior Volleyball World Championship.

Her development extends beyond technique to emotional resilience. She endures psychological stress, performance anxiety, and the pressures of maintaining her top-level position. Her ambition to become the world's best volleyball player drives her through hardships, introducing dilemmas and incompatibilities in her personal life. The narrative underscores her evolution from a talented transfer student to a seasoned athlete capable of leading teams nationally and internationally.
