Kikka Kitamoto, originally named Kikka Kobayashi after her adoption, is a civilian whose story begins during the One Year War. She is one of three orphaned refugees from Side 7 taken aboard the Earth Federation warship White Base, alongside Katz Hawin and Letz Cofan. The trio serve as mascots for the crew, though their presence occasionally leads to troublesome incidents.
During her time on White Base, Kikka is primarily cared for by crew member Fraw Bow. Despite their youth, Kikka and the other children involve themselves in shipboard activities, taking on odd jobs like cleaning and painting. Their most critical contribution comes when they help discover and dispose of bombs planted during Char Aznable's infiltration of Jaburo. This act convinces the crew to let them remain aboard for the remainder of its military engagements, including the final battles at Solomon and A Baoa Qu.
At the war's conclusion, Kikka, Katz, and Letz demonstrate latent Newtype abilities, psychically sensing and guiding Amuro Ray to the lifeboat carrying the surviving White Base crew.
After the war, Kikka and the other two orphans are formally adopted by Hayato Kobayashi and his wife, Fraw Bow. The family, which includes Fraw's unborn biological child, resides on Earth. They visit Amuro Ray's home in Cheyenne, Wyoming, before eventually settling in Japan.
Kikka later returns to space to pursue an education, focusing on her goal of becoming a writer. Following the Second Neo Zeon War, she wins the Mt. Fuji New Writer's Award. About a year after the Earth Federation officially declares Amuro Ray deceased, Kikka embarks on a project to write a book that humanizes him, contrasting with his public image as a legendary war hero. The director of the Von Braun Times agrees to publish her unedited account if she completes a satisfactory work before her graduation.
To research her book, Kikka returns to her adoptive family's home in Shizuoka during a Christmas break to inform Fraw and Letz of her plans. Fraw supports the endeavor by providing her own personal accounts of Amuro from before the war, giving Kikka a letter from the late Hayato Kobayashi, and the business card of Kai Shiden. After reading Hayato's letter, which details events at Jaburo, Kikka contacts Kai. He provides her with a comprehensive list of White Base crew members and Amuro's allies within and outside the Federation.
Kikka conducts interviews with numerous individuals connected to Amuro Ray. She meets with Job John, who speaks of Amuro's rapid development into one of the Federation's top aces. She interviews Omur Fang, who reveals Amuro's diligent work with bridge staff to analyze Zeon units and refine simulators for other pilots.
A significant interview is with Kamaria Ray, Amuro's mother, at a refugee camp for those displaced by the drop of Fifth Luna. Initially reluctant, Kamaria eventually shares her account, expressing regret over her inability to provide proper parental love during a critical reunion with her son cut short by the horrors of war.
Other interviewees include Oscar Dublin in New Hong Kong, who discusses Amuro's belief in Newtypes as a source of hope and how his views were stifled by the Federation. Stephanie Luio recounts a violent first encounter with Amuro and how he later saved her during a Titans attack. Mosk Han, an engineer, describes his meeting with Amuro after Solomon and his subsequent departure from Augusta Lab due to human experimentation for creating Cyber Newtypes.
Stephanie Luio also coordinates a meeting for Kikka with Sayla Mass. Sayla explains the tragic story of Lalah Sune, a Newtype who served Zeon and shared a deep connection with Amuro, and her death, which profoundly affected both Amuro and Char Aznable.
Kikka later receives an email from a woman identifying herself as Karen Russel, whom she correctly identifies as Beltorchika Irma, a former spy and journalist who had a past romantic relationship with Amuro. Beltorchika details how she supported Amuro as he took on a more active role with Karaba, and how their relationship ended due to the emotional toll of his duties and his pain over failing to prevent another tragedy similar to Lalah's.
Further interviews include a salaryman named Kato, who worked with the AEUG and Karaba and speaks of the respect Amuro commanded through his actions and care for comrades. Yuu Kajima, a retired veteran, discusses the public perception of Newtypes and the legendary status of Amuro during and after the war.
During her travels, Kikka visits a junk shop where she encounters a group of junk dealers, including Elle Vianno, Mondo Agake, and Beecha Oleg. They give her a peculiar T-shaped object from the wreckage of Char's rebellion. Learning that space debris often orbits specific Lagrange points, particularly near the former Side 4 Moore colony, the group invites Kikka to join them on a future visit to the area.
Kikka also travels to Sweetwater to gain perspective on how Amuro was perceived by his enemies, meeting with a government worker named James Stronger, who explains how Federation neglect contributed to the circumstances of Char's rebellion.
