Charged by feudal lord Matsudaira Katamori to restore the Shinsengumi’s authority in Kyoto, he confronted the task by offering eight condemned criminals a stark ultimatum: assume the identities of fallen captains or face execution. Seven accepted, forging a makeshift unit under his command.

Unaccustomed to leadership after years of obedience, Heisuke grappled with doubt, deferring to his subordinates’ instincts while enforcing a ban on swordplay—save for Akira, whose expertise he leveraged to train the others. His resolve faced its ultimate test when he intercepted a lethal strike from the Masked Demons’ leader, Rashōmaru, meant for substitute captain Ichibanboshi. Though surviving the blow, prolonged recovery compelled him to cede leadership to Ichibanboshi, marking a reluctant end to his command.
