Chikage Kazama leads the Kazama family, western Japan's most powerful demon clan. His clan owes an ancestral debt of honor to the Satsuma domain for protection after the Battle of Sekigahara, driving him to aid imperialist forces despite his clear disdain for humans. This allegiance is solely about repaying his ancestors, not personal loyalty.
A pureblood demon, Kazama possesses significant physical strength, favoring raw power over technical skill in combat. His personality exhibits arrogance, selfishness, and cruelty, marked by pronounced prejudice against humans and even stronger contempt for Rasetsu, whom he considers abominations. He views humans as greedy, foolish betrayers prone to destruction and dismisses Rasetsu as unnatural perversions. His interactions often feature dry sarcasm and scorn, with difficulty expressing sentimental emotions like affection or gratitude.
Kazama's narrative role varies. He frequently appears as an antagonist pursuing Chizuru Yukimura upon learning she is a rare pureblood female demon from the extinct Yukimura clan. His initial goal is to forcibly marry her to produce powerful offspring and preserve demon bloodlines, resulting in multiple kidnapping attempts thwarted by the Shinsengumi. In some routes, he escalates to primary antagonist, seeking revenge against Hijikata Toshizo for perceived dishonor or relentlessly pursuing Chizuru against her will.
His own route reveals greater complexity. After an explosion separates Chizuru from the Shinsengumi, Kazama saves her and accompanies her journey to reunite with them. Extended contact shifts his motivations from obligation to genuine personal investment. He develops respect for the Shinsengumi's unwavering convictions despite their human limitations, acknowledging them as true warriors. He experiences internal conflict between clan responsibilities and personal desires, showing envy toward the Shinsengumi's freedom to prioritize individual ideals.
His relationship with Chizuru evolves during their journey. Initial pragmatic interest in her bloodline gives way to admiration for her resilience facing tragedy and loss. He displays protectiveness consistent with male demons' instincts toward female demons, acknowledging her growing maturity and strength as Yukimura clan head. Though his route leaves demon lore questions unresolved, he demonstrates capacity for subtle kindness—like watching over Chizuru while claiming to rest—and respects her boundaries despite opportunities to force compliance.
In the film narrative, Kazama aids Chizuru's travel to Ezo after saving her from a fall. He facilitates her reunion with Hijikata and later challenges him to a duel. After losing, Kazama acknowledges Hijikata's worthiness by bestowing the demon name "Hakuoki," permitting him to live his remaining life freely.
Kazama typically operates with two demon companions: Kyuju Amagiri, who offers reasoned guidance, and Shiranui Kyo, who shares Kazama's aggressive tendencies. While valuing them as subordinates or allies in demon matters, he maintains emotional distance from both, viewing them as tools rather than friends. His character design features blonde hair, red eyes, and traditional Japanese attire supplemented by Western-style clothing.
