Description
Chris Otomo Teito holds the office of Prime Minister of Japan in the year 2045, and holds the distinction of being the country's first American-born leader. Originally born Kristopher Tate in the United States, he was active in American politics before emigrating to Japan. His deep appreciation for Japanese culture took root during his assignment at the U.S. embassy as a State Department diplomat. After leaving diplomacy at the age of thirty, he remained in Japan and founded a successful micromachine company. The company's success, driven by two patented micromachine designs, caught the attention of Sachio Otomo, a powerful Japanese politician who led the influential Otomo Group. After selling his company to the group, he married Sachio's daughter, Akiko Otomo. This marriage secured him Japanese citizenship and launched his political career, eventually leading to his election as Prime Minister, succeeding Yoko Kayabuki.
As a character, Chris Otomo Teito is a complex pragmatist. While his political rivals decried him as a puppet for the American Empire, this perception masks a genuine and earnest desire to lead Japan on a path of recovery and prosperity for its people. His primary motivation is to navigate the nation through the ongoing economic disarray caused by the Synchronized Global Default, a global financial catastrophe. His personal philosophy is to act solely for the benefit of Japan, and he is a calculating leader who is not afraid to sacrifice his public reputation or even risk his personal safety if it provides a strategic advantage. His strategies blend audacious political maneuvering with quiet subterfuge. For example, following the assassination of his father-in-law Sachio Otomo, he disseminated false intelligence implicating himself in certain dealings in order to lure the attacker into a trap that Public Security Section 9 could spring.
In the story, Chris Otomo Teito serves as a key political figure who sets the stage for much of the action. Less than a month after taking office, he secretly ordered Daisuke Aramaki to reestablish the disbanded Public Security Section 9. This was done to investigate the emergence of post-humans, a new breed of human with superhuman abilities, initially in cooperation with the American Empire's National Security Agency. However, his relationship with the American Empire is a critical part of his development. After learning that the American Empire's involvement with an AI known as Code 1A84 was responsible for infecting people with cyberbrains and creating post-humans, he decisively severed ties. He declared that he no longer represented the American Empire and would not work for them anymore. This pivot underscores his ultimate prioritization of Japan's security and autonomy over foreign alliances. Key relationships include his trusted subordinate, Daisuke Aramaki, whom he tasks with leading Section 9, and his father-in-law, Sachio Otomo, head of the Tokyo Reconstruction Committee, whose death becomes a turning point.
While Chris Otomo Teito does not possess the cybernetic combat abilities of characters like Major Motoko Kusanagi, his notable abilities lie in the political and strategic realms. He is a skilled diplomat and a pragmatist capable of making difficult, secretive decisions. Physically, he is a composed and neatly groomed individual with blonde hair, blue eyes, and almost always appears in a formal black suit and tie. His name carries symbolic weight, with his chosen surname Otomo meaning great friend and Teito translating to imperial capital, reflecting his adopted identity and highest office.
