Movie
Description
Barnaby Bernstein, universally nicknamed Bear, is a recurring human character and a classmate/friend of Nathan "Nate" Adams at Springdale Elementary. His robust, stocky build, dark-ringed eyes, and spiky black hair project a rough, rebellious biker aura. He typically wears a blue varsity jacket with white sleeves over a white shirt featuring a triangular design, brown shorts, and white sneakers. This tough appearance sharply contrasts his true personality.
Despite his thuggish exterior, Bear defies expectations with a gentle, sensitive, and slightly bumbling nature. He cries easily, harbors an intense fear of his mother, displays gluttonous tendencies, and lacks athleticism. He deeply values his friendships with Nate, Edward "Eddie" Archer, and Katie Forester. His home life features frequent comical confrontations where his mother scolds him, often dragging him home by the ear after incidents.
In the first game, Bear tasks the player with retrieving his parents' lost engagement ring from a pond. He later gets himself trapped inside an anatomical model by Rattelle after unknowingly taking one of her rib bones, requiring rescue. He also seeks help when his mother, inspirited by Wazzat, forgets to make dinner.
The sequel sees Bear embroiled in superhero-themed misadventures as "Bear Boy." He enlists the player to gather costume items like a belt and a dull sword. Whisper suggests using Mochismo for strength, but it backfires, causing Bear to flee and fall into a river. Later, Whisper proposes Nekidspeed for speed during training at the Springdale Sports Club, resulting in Bear running uncontrollably into his mother. A third attempt involves obtaining Glorious Mask merchandise and trying to recruit Eddie as a rival; influenced by Supoor Hero, Eddie clashes with Bear on a rooftop. Each incident concludes with Bear being chewed out by his mother.
In the first film's opening, Bear briefly leaves school with Nate, Katie, and Eddie, discussing strange enlarging objects. A more prominent scene occurs when Nate finds Bear and Eddie at a toy vending machine. Bear obtains a rare Emperor Krills toy; Eddie tries to buy it at a discounted "friendship rate" but lacks sufficient money. During this scene, Bear bizarrely manifests as a 30-year-old man, contrasting his usual pre-teen appearance.
In the anime continuity, Bearmie is identified as his younger sister. Bear is occasionally referenced in later media, such as when Nate and Katie mention him to Natsume while discussing friends, though his continued residence in Springdale is unconfirmed. He experiences fewer yo-kai inspiriting incidents compared to his friends. An alternate universe version of him exists as the yo-kai Mukade-otoko due to the Kuroi Yo-kai Watch. His nickname "Bear" and surname "Bernstein" reference The Berenstain Bears. Both his and Nate's fathers work as carpenters. Episode 26 reveals his crush on Lulu.
