Tora is an ancient tiger-like yōkai resembling a raijū, sealed for 500 years within a temple basement by the Beast Spear after being impaled by the legendary weapon. This blow was delivered by an ancestor of Ushio Aotsuki.
Centuries before this imprisonment, he existed as a human named Shagakusha. From infancy, he served as a host for the ancient evil entity Hakumen no Mono. This connection masked the Beast Spear's presence, shielding the temple from Hakumen's minions during his confinement. Unlike other Azafuse—former Beast Spear wielders transformed into tiger-like yōkai—Tora retained traces of his humanity, a remnant of his tragic past as a fallen wielder.
Freed accidentally, Tora immediately threatens to devour Ushio but is restrained by the Beast Spear. This compels a contentious partnership where Tora combats supernatural threats drawn by his demonic aura, particularly other yōkai and Hakumen no Mono's minions. Though he maintains a predatory demeanor and frequently voices his desire to eat humans—especially Ushio and Mayuko Inoue, whose hamburgers he enjoys—an unacknowledged protectiveness toward them emerges.
