Description
Tora is an ancient tiger-like yōkai resembling a raijū, sealed for 500 years within a temple basement by the Beast Spear after being impaled by the legendary weapon. This blow was delivered by an ancestor of Ushio Aotsuki.

Centuries before this imprisonment, he existed as a human named Shagakusha. From infancy, he served as a host for the ancient evil entity Hakumen no Mono. This connection masked the Beast Spear's presence, shielding the temple from Hakumen's minions during his confinement. Unlike other Azafuse—former Beast Spear wielders transformed into tiger-like yōkai—Tora retained traces of his humanity, a remnant of his tragic past as a fallen wielder.

Freed accidentally, Tora immediately threatens to devour Ushio but is restrained by the Beast Spear. This compels a contentious partnership where Tora combats supernatural threats drawn by his demonic aura, particularly other yōkai and Hakumen no Mono's minions. Though he maintains a predatory demeanor and frequently voices his desire to eat humans—especially Ushio and Mayuko Inoue, whose hamburgers he enjoys—an unacknowledged protectiveness toward them emerges. He refuses dishonorable attacks against them and finds himself perpetually engaged in their company.

His relationship with Ushio evolves from mutual hostility toward reluctant camaraderie. Tora conceals his developing moral compass while adapting to modern life, often masking actions with self-serving justifications. His interactions reveal a complex duality: outwardly embracing his fearsome monster role while increasingly intervening to protect humans, especially during clashes with Hakumen no Mono's forces. This progression culminates in his active role uniting humans and yōkai against their common foe.

In the parody OVA "Comically Deformed Theater," Tora's traits are exaggerated for comedy. He interacts humorously with a kitten, showcasing his animalistic instincts, and joins a chaotic mass chase involving monsters from the OVA series. This spin-off highlights his territorial nature and impulsive behavior while preserving his core identity as a formidable yet paradoxically protective entity.

Across all portrayals, Tora wields immense physical strength, control over lightning, and heightened senses typical of his yōkai physiology. His connection to the Beast Spear and history as both its wielder and victim remain central motivations, fueling his conflicted allegiance between demonic instincts and latent humanity.
