TV-Series
Description
Kyōko Kagami is the mother of Atsuko Kagami, better known as Akko-chan. Her background and occupation change across the different anime adaptations of Himitsu no Akko-chan, reflecting the era in which each series was produced. In the first anime series from the late 1960s, Kyōko is a full-time homemaker. She manages the household with warmth and efficiency while her husband, a ship captain, is often away at sea. In the second series from 1988, she is redesigned as a famous illustrator, a profession that showcases her artistic talent, though she remains somewhat clumsy at housework. In the third series from 1998, she is portrayed as a general artist, continuing the theme of a creative, working mother.

Regardless of the version, Kyōko Kagami is defined by her gentle, patient, and caring personality. She is a loving mother who always supports Akko, offering encouragement and a stable home. Akko admires her mother deeply, and Kyōko serves as a role model for kindness and responsibility. Her motivation is primarily her family’s well‑being, and she often helps Akko learn important lessons about honesty, friendship, and using the magic compact wisely.

Within the story, Kyōko appears as a supporting character. She provides comfort and a sense of normalcy in Akko’s life, even as her daughter uses the magical mirror to transform into various people and objects. Her relationship with Akko is close and affectionate; the two share many tender moments. She also maintains a loving, if occasionally bickering, relationship with her husband, Kenichiro. Over the course of the three anime series, Kyōko’s character develops from a traditional housewife into a professionally accomplished woman, yet her core traits of kindness and devotion remain consistent. She possesses no supernatural abilities, but she is skilled in domestic tasks in the first series and talented in the visual arts in the later series.
