Description
Osamu Yamanami is an Earth Defense Force officer who graduated from the National Space Defense Academy alongside Juzo Okita and Ryu Hijikata. In the original timeline during the Black Nebula Empire's invasion, he takes command of the Space Battleship Yamato after Earth's occupation. He leads Yamato on the mission to attack the enemy homeworld Dezarium. A direct hit on the bridge during the final assault mortally wounds him. He dies in Susumu Kodai's arms, naming Kodai his successor. His death, alongside Mamoru Kodai and Sasha, is avenged when Yamato destroys Dezarium and Emperor Skulldart with its Wave Motion Gun.

In the reboot timeline, his background expands. Born April 4, 2150, he serves as captain of the battleship Kirishima under Admiral Okita during the First Contact battle at Pluto in the Garmillas War. He later commands the experimental warship Andromeda and rises to Supreme Commander of the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy during the Gatlantis Campaign. During the Yamato crew's revolt, he leads the Andromeda fleet against them but permits their defection after acknowledging their resolve. At Saturn, his fleet suffers devastating losses against Gatlantis, crippling the Andromeda. After repairs, he pilots the automated Andromeda Kai on a near-suicidal attack to save Yamato trapped within the White Comet, surviving the ship's destruction.

Following the Gatlantis Campaign, he resigns from combat duty due to accountability for military strategies but retains his position as Supreme Commander. By 2205, he joins a peace delegation to Garmillas and Iscandar, commanding the 65th Escort Corps. During the 2207 Dezarium invasion, he oversees Yamato's secret renovations at Icarus Observatory and leads the Special Task Force under Director General Heikuro Todo. He assumes command of Yamato during Operation DAD, dismissing Kodai for emotional instability and becoming the ship's fourth captain. He guides Yamato on its "hardest voyage" across spacetime to confront Dezarium, reflecting on his role at the same age as his late mentor Okita.

Across continuities, his character design draws inspiration from producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki and actor Richard Burton. His surname references Yamanami Keisuke, co-founder of the Shinsengumi. His spirit appears alongside Okita and Hijikata in the ending of *Be Forever Yamato*.
