Description
Daisuke Shima was born on August 15, 2178, in Naha, Japan, into a family steeped in naval tradition. His father, Captain Daigo Shima, commanded the UNCN space cruiser Murasame and instilled in him the core principle that a sailor never abandons a comrade. This legacy initially led Shima to the Space Merchant Marine School. Yet his path changed irrevocably after his father's death during a disastrous first contact mission with the Garmillas Empire in 2191, an event that ignited the Great Garmillas War. Abandoning merchant marine ambitions, Shima enrolled in the Space Officer Training Academy on April 1, 2194, graduating on March 31, 2198.

He served as a navigation officer aboard the cruiser Tsurugi before assignment to Project Izumo, a planned evacuation effort. This mission transformed into Operation M, where Shima and his close friend Susumu Kodai recovered a vital capsule from the Mars spacecraft Amaterasu in January 2199. The capsule contained plans for the Wave-Motion Engine and a message from Queen Stasha of Iscandar, enabling the construction of the space battleship Yamato. Shima received a wartime promotion to Lieutenant and became the Yamato's Chief Navigator. At launch, his younger brother Jiro delivered a family good luck charm, cementing Shima's resolve to return home.

Throughout the voyage to Iscandar, Shima piloted the Yamato through countless battles against Garmillas forces. His navigational skill proved indispensable, enabling critical maneuvers like evading minefields and navigating near Pluto. Though initially hesitant about controlling the powerful vessel, his confidence and proficiency grew. His loyalty to Kodai remained firm, though their differing personalities sometimes sparked conflicts, including physical altercations in the original series continuity, ultimately strengthening their bond.

During the Gatlantis campaign, Shima briefly transferred to the Transport Fleet before rejoining the Yamato. He later served as Executive Officer under Captain Kodai. His personal life included an unrequited interstellar romance with Teresa of Telezart during the Comet Empire conflict. Though heartbroken when Teresa chose to remain on her doomed world, her sacrifice fueled his dedication to the crew.

Later assigned to lead the Air Force's Limited Autonomous Air Defense System after the Iscandar Incident, Shima was killed in action aboard the city satellite Uruk in 2202 during the conflict with the Dengil Empire. He died attempting to prevent the artificial movement of the water planet Aquarius toward Earth. His death deeply affected his brother Jiro and former comrades Yuki Mori and Shiro Sanada, who reflected on his sacrifice during Earth's subsequent crises.
