Description
Shiro Sanada was born on February 11, 2169, in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. After graduating at the top of his class from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he returned to Japan to attend the National Space Defense Academy. There, he forged a close friendship with fellow student Mamoru Kodai and junior researcher Kaoru Niimi. While struggling with socialization, Sanada exhibited exceptional intellectual abilities, particularly under the mentorship of a leading wave-motion theory expert. His early life included a traumatic incident where his sister died in an accident, leaving him conflicted about science's capabilities and limitations.
During the Great Garmillas War, Sanada joined the United Nations Cosmo Force, assigned to the Strategy Department 9th Section within the Far-East District Staff Office. This unit became the core of Program Yamato, tasked with building an interstellar vessel to retrieve the Cosmo Reverse System from Iscandar and save Earth. Sanada proved instrumental in developing the wave-motion engine from Iscandarian plans and invented the wave-motion gun by refining his teacher's solution to the Buchinsky wave-motion equation, a weapon critical to the space battleship Yamato. In 2198, he concealed the suicidal nature of Operation M from his friend Mamoru Kodai, who perished during the mission, burdening Sanada with lasting guilt.
Assigned as the Yamato's executive officer and technical officer in 2199, Sanada oversaw scientific operations during its journey to Iscandar. He applied his analytical prowess to solve crises, countering Garmillas dimensional submarines and analyzing alien technology like the "Alter" device. His leadership extended beyond technical duties to managing crew conflicts, including a mutiny on Beemela 4. After returning to Earth, he opposed the Earth Federation government's militaristic policies. He participated in reactivating the Yamato in 2202 upon receiving a message from the entity Teresa. During the Gatlantis conflict, he served aboard the Yamato and later the battleship Ginga, contributing to key battles including Earth's final defense.
Following the Gatlantis campaign, Sanada advocated politically for the rescue of Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori. He was then transferred to command the modified dreadnought-class battlecarrier Hyuga as part of the 65th Escort Corps' peace mission to the Salezar system. There, he engaged Dezariam's forces in the Iscandar Incident. Upon returning to Earth, he was dismissed from this post but later reassigned to the Yamato at Icarus Observatory for Operation DAD. He led the observation team for Sasha Iscandar Kodai, the hybrid daughter of his deceased friend Mamoru Kodai. After the battle at Icarus Observatory, Sanada resumed his role as executive officer aboard the Yamato for its voyage toward Dezariam's homeland.
Sanada's personality blends intellectual rigor with deep loyalty and responsibility. He frequently references poetry and philosophical concepts, reflecting the influence of Mamoru Kodai, who encouraged his appreciation for literature. His analytical mindset is tempered by an awareness of emotional and ethical complexities, especially concerning technological consequences. This balance defines his leadership, where he supports others' command potential, as when he endorsed Susumu Kodai's tactical decisions against Gatlantis.
