TV-Series
Description
Ryusuke Domon exists in two franchise timelines. In the original series (OS), he is a new recruit reluctantly assigned to kitchen duties aboard the ship, eventually accepting the role. His parents died when a Galman Empire missile struck their tourist rocket, sending it into a sun. This loss forges a connection with Susumu Kodai, who shares a background of familial tragedy. Domon frequently joins missions outside his kitchen duties, especially during the Galman-Bolar conflict.
The remake timeline (2199/2205 onwards) expands his background. He is the son of Ryuzo Domon, owner of Domon Hightech, a small company dependent on contracts linked to Earth's Time Fault facility. A referendum sacrificed the Time Fault to fund a rescue mission for stranded Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori, bankrupting Domon Hightech. Ryuzo Domon subsequently died in a hovercar crash (potentially suicide), witnessed by Ryusuke, who blamed Kodai for the chain of events.
To force a confrontation with the now-Captain Kodai of the Yamato, Domon falsified his military records and joined the 65th Escort Corps as a cadet. Initially assigned as a helmsman during the fleet's peace mission to Salezar, his deception was uncovered by security chief Toru Hoshina. Arrested and reassigned, he worked in the accounting department as a quartermaster under Chief Accountant Hajime Hirata, handling kitchen duties like cooking and ration distribution.
During this mission, he bonded with Sukeji Yabu, a former Yamato crew member serving as a Garmillas technical exchange officer. Both were isolated from the crew – Domon due to his deception, Yabu due to past mutiny and Garmillas ties. They discussed the referendum's fallout and Ryuzo's death. Yabu offered perspective, suggesting Ryuzo smiled at death because his son was present, shifting Domon's understanding.
When planet Garmillas was destroyed by Dezariam, Yabu attempted to steal a shuttle to search for family. Domon intervened, arguing the futility. Later, learning Iscandar harbored Garmillas refugees and faced Dezariam attack, Domon organized a mutiny with fellow cadets. They planned to expel Earth's Peace Corps delegates and force Yamato through a subspace gate to aid the refugees. Security foiled the plot, but Kodai, acknowledging Domon's motives, chose to proceed with the rescue.
Following these events, Domon graduated from the Space Defense Academy. He was appointed tactics officer aboard the carrier Asuka. During the Dezariam invasion of Earth, he served at the Icarus Observatory before transferring to the Yamato as tactics officer at Admiral Osamu Yamanami's request.
