Description
Bête, also known as Beth, is a fictional character from the anime and manga series Dropkick on My Devil!. Despite a deceptively cute and dog-like appearance, Bête has a fearsome origin as the offspring of the legendary Beast of Gévaudan, a mythical creature known for terrorizing 18th-century France. Physically, Bête is a small, brown, quadrupedal mammal, resembling a dog with dark stripes and a distinctive mohawk-like ridge of fur running down its back. Its vocalizations are typical of a canine, often barking "wan," a trait that leads most casual observers to mistake it for an ordinary stray dog. This misunderstanding is how Bête enters the story, first appearing suddenly in front of the characters Yurine Hanazono and Jashin-chan while they were walking through town. Yurine quickly took a liking to the creature and adopted it, providing it with a doghouse in the garden of her apartment, where it now lives as a de facto pet.
The core of Bête's personality is defined by a stark and often comedic duality. Towards its owner, Yurine Hanazono, Bête is the picture of domesticity: completely docile, loyal, and obedient. It behaves like a well-trained house pet, showing no signs of the legendary ferocity associated with its lineage. This gentle and calm demeanor is reserved exclusively for Yurine, to whom it shows unwavering affection. However, this behavior changes dramatically in its interactions with other characters, most notably the devil Jashin-chan. With Jashin-chan, Bête displays what can only be described as overly enthusiastic affection that quickly escalates into extreme violence. In a recurring and exaggerated gag, Bête will show its fondness for Jashin-chan by biting her, often with enough force to sever her limbs or even nearly eat her entire lower body. This dangerous proclivity causes Jashin-chan to live in constant fear of the creature, despite the fact that the bites are never presented as malevolent attacks, but rather as a twisted form of play or excitement. Bête's personality otherwise mirrors that of a typical dog; it can be playful, enjoys being petted, and has been known to display flirtatious behavior towards other female dogs.
Bête's primary role in the story is as a supporting character and a recurring source of physical comedy within the chaotic ecosystem of Yurine's apartment. It functions as a living, unpredictable hazard, particularly for Jashin-chan, whose grandiose and selfish schemes are often derailed by a sudden, violent bite from the otherwise placid beast. Unlike the human and divine characters who actively pursue goals, Bête is largely passive, acting as a wild card whose presence reinforces the constant danger inherent in the setting. It has no significant character development or personal narrative arcs across the series; its motivations remain simple and animalistic—loyalty to its owner and a desire for interaction, however violent, with those it considers playmates. Aside from its bond with Yurine, Bête's most notable relationship is this adversarial yet affectionate dynamic with Jashin-chan. It also forms a close companionship with the minotaur Minos, for whom Bête has acted as a shepherd dog during their time in Hokkaido. Additionally, the heavenly custodian Pino possesses the unique ability to understand Bête's barks and growls as human language, suggesting a hidden complexity to its communication. Other characters, including the police officer Mei Tachibana and the snake demon Medusa, recognize Bête's canine traits, and it has a known effect on vampires, who exhibit a natural, instinctual fear of its presence.
Regarding notable abilities, Bête's most prominent trait is its immense physical strength and ferocity, which is considered formidable even by supernatural standards. Despite its small size, it possesses a biting force powerful enough to instantly sever the limbs and body parts of a devil like Jashin-chan, who is otherwise incredibly resilient. This raw power is a direct inheritance from its legendary parent, the Beast of Gévaudan. Even other demons view Bête as a significant and problematic threat due to its unpredictable outbursts. However, this fearsome power is not under its conscious control; it manifests only in specific contexts, primarily during its excited interactions with Jashin-chan, and is entirely absent when Bête is around Yurine. In summary, Bête is a creature of extreme contrasts—a legendary monster living as a domestic pet, a potential killer that is also a loyal companion, and the source of some of the most graphic yet comedic violence in the series.
