Description
Kiyo, an elderly maidservant of aristocratic origins, dedicates her life to serving the protagonist’s Tokyo family. Initially a childhood caretaker, she emerges as his primary emotional anchor after his parents’ deaths. Though her past as a fallen noble remains shrouded, her present unfolds through steadfast loyalty.

Throughout the protagonist’s rebellious youth, Kiyo showers him with unwavering praise despite his notorious mischief, insisting he harbors a “noble spirit” destined for greatness. Her fervent admiration contrasts starkly with familial disapproval, leaving the protagonist both baffled and reliant on her support.

Following his mother’s death, Kiyo sustains her care, privately funding gifts and comforts. When his father dies years later, she persists in her devotion despite the eldest brother dissolving the family estate, leaving the protagonist near-destitute. She assumes the role of surrogate mother, offering financial aid and counsel as he departs for a teaching post in Matsuyama.

Upon his return to Tokyo, Kiyo joins his household, residing there until pneumonia claims her life. She is interred in the family grave, a testament to his lasting reverence. Her dialogue and deeds—marked by self-sacrifice, undying loyalty, and an idealized perception of the protagonist—persistently contrast with others’ harsher judgments.

Kiyo remains unchanged in her devotion, serving as a stabilizing force even as her rose-tinted view occasionally conflicts with the protagonist’s self-doubt. Her narrative arc concludes without adaptation beyond the original text.
