Shukichi Haneda is the eldest son of Tsutomu Akai and Mary Sera, and the older brother of Masumi Sera. Born in England, he relocated to Japan with his sister after his parents' separation and his mother's contraction of the APTX 4869, which regressed her to a childlike state. The siblings adopted their mother's maiden name, Sera.
He exhibits exceptional intelligence and deductive abilities, traits inherited from his parents. Professionally, Shukichi is a highly accomplished shogi player who holds the prestigious Ryuo (Dragon King) title. He competes under the name Shukichi Haneda, a name he chose independently before learning of its connection to the wealthy Haneda family involved in a decades-old unsolved case his father investigated.
Shukichi maintains a close yet complex relationship with his sister, Masumi. Aware of their mother's condition and her presence in Japan, he often communicates with her by phone. For Masumi's protection, Shukichi deliberately withheld information about his investigation into their father's disappearance and the Black Organization, leading to temporary friction between them.
In his personal life, Shukichi has a secret marriage to police officer Yumi Miyamoto. They met when he assisted her during a bank hostage situation. Concerns about potential danger stemming from his family's connection to the organization targeting his parents initially kept their marriage hidden. He deeply cares for Yumi and eventually revealed their relationship to his sister.
Following his father Tsutomu Akai's disappearance seventeen years prior—presumed connected to the Black Organization—Shukichi actively pursued the circumstances. His investigation paralleled his mother Mary's own efforts. He possesses a silver knight shogi piece found at the scene of the unsolved Koji Haneda murder case, identical to one owned by his father. This object serves as a key link connecting the Haneda case, his father's disappearance, and the organization.
Shukichi later discovered his younger brother, Shuichi Akai, was alive after faking his death. He cooperated with Shuichi and the FBI in the confrontation against the Black Organization, notably during the clash on the Bell Tree Express, where his shogi piece played a role in exposing Rum's identity.
He appears as a passenger on the superconducting magnetic levitation train in the movie "Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet". His presence is noted, though he plays no active role in the film's central case.
