Shuichi Akai, a British-American FBI agent of Japanese descent, was born in England to Tsutomu Akai and Mary Sera. His father’s disappearance during the unsolved Kohji Haneda and Amanda Hughes murder case seventeen years earlier forced the family to relocate to Japan. Driven to unravel the mystery behind his father’s fate, Shuichi pursued education in the United States before joining the FBI. He infiltrated the Black Organization under the alias Dai Moroboshi, earning the codename Rye. During his undercover mission, he formed a romantic bond with Akemi Miyano, a low-ranking member and cousin of Shiho Miyano. A critical error by FBI colleague Andre Camel exposed his identity, leading to Akemi’s execution by Gin. Her death cemented his resolve to dismantle the organization and exact vengeance on Gin. To evade retaliation, Shuichi faked his death and assumed the identity of Subaru Okiya, a graduate student residing near Conan Edogawa. This guise enabled covert operations to protect Ai Haibara, Shiho’s younger self, while strategically deceiving allies like former partner Jodie Starling, whom he distanced to safeguard his mission. Renowned for his stoicism and tactical genius, Shuichi prioritizes objectives over personal ties. His analytical prowess rivals Shinichi Kudo’s, and he demonstrates exceptional skill as a sniper, landing precise shots beyond 700 yards. Proficient in Jeet Kune Do, he trained his sister Masumi Sera, and employs disguise techniques refined with Yukiko Kudo and Professor Agasa. Family tensions define his dynamic with Mary, his mother, who was physically reduced by the APTX 4869 drug, while he remains protective of siblings Shukichi Haneda and Masumi. Despite social reticence, he conveys loyalty through cryptic messages to Jodie and martial arts tutorials for Masumi. Notable aliases include Rye, Dai Moroboshi, and Subaru Okiya. A rivalry with Rei Furuya (Bourbon), a Public Security Bureau agent, stems from a misunderstanding implicating Shuichi in fellow operative Scotch’s death. Identifiable by left-handedness, a bourbon preference, and a black knit cap, his appearance shifted after Akemi’s death—his long hair shorn, eyes perpetually weary. Vehicles tied to his aliases include a black Chevrolet C1500 and a red Subaru 360.
