Description
Moko, whose full name is Motoko Naniwa, is a classmate and the closest friend of the protagonist Atsuko Kagami, better known as Akko-chan. She appears in all adaptations of the series as a supporting character. Moko is an energetic and cheerful girl who is also notably loyal and kind-hearted, always ready to support Akko in her adventures and help her solve problems. However, her personality also has a more intense side: she can be stern, loud, and quick to anger, often quarreling with Akko over small matters or becoming abruptly jealous. Despite these heated moments, she reconciles just as easily, and the friendship remains strong. Across the different anime versions, Moko is consistently portrayed as the more tomboyish of the duo, and in later adaptations this trait is emphasized even further, making her more reckless and physically aggressive compared to Akko. She is known for her playful, high-energy demeanor that often lifts the spirits of those around her. Moko also possesses a talent for drawing and is artistically creative, a skill that comes into play in several episodes. She has no supernatural abilities and serves primarily as a grounded, relatable best friend, providing comic relief, emotional support, and occasionally acting as a moral counterbalance to Akko’s more impulsive decisions. Her relationship with her brother Kankichi Naniwa is also a recurring element, and she maintains close ties with their mutual friends. While Moko’s personality has shifted slightly between the original 1969 series and the remakes—becoming less polite and more boisterous over time—her fundamental role as Akko’s loyal, spirited, and sometimes fiery companion remains constant throughout the franchise.
