Goro Otaki is a chief inspector for the Osaka Prefectural Police. He shares a close bond with his superior, Heizo Hattori, and maintains good relations with officer Ginshiro Toyama. Otaki also supports Heizo's son, Heiji Hattori, occasionally providing him with off-the-record investigative information. Heiji affectionately calls him "Otaki-han," while Otaki uses the nickname "Hei-chan" for Heiji. He interacts with Kazuha Toyama, who uses "Otaki-han" or "Otaki-san," and he calls her "Kazuha-chan." In his youth, Otaki aimed for professional baseball. His team reached the top eight in the national high school baseball tournament, the Detective Koshien. He bears a facial scar acquired early in his detective career. Professionally, Otaki is serious and dedicated. He collaborates with colleagues from other prefectures, such as Tokyo's Wataru Takagi, whom he addresses as "Takagi-san." Otaki is willing to take personal responsibility, demonstrated when Ginshiro Toyama reprimanded him during the Detective Play Murder Case for actively preventing a suspect's suicide. His interaction with Conan Edogawa is formal; Conan uses "Inspector Otaki" (Otaki-keibu), while Otaki typically calls Conan "boy" (bozo). Otaki addresses Kogoro Mouri as "Mouri-san" or the Osaka-style "Mouri-han." Beyond his credited appearance in the *Osaka Okonomiyaki Odyssey* OVA, Otaki features in numerous canonical cases including the Stabbed Wallet Case, the K3 Murder Case, the Naniwa Swordsman Case, the Furinkazan Case, the Unexpected Murder case, the Vampire's Mansion case, the Drug Trading Case, and the Detective Play Murder Case. He also appears in multiple non-canonical films and OVAs.
