Sha Wujing, appearing under the name Sa Gojō in the anime adaptation "Boku no Son Goku," is initially encountered as a cannibalistic ogre inhabiting a castle. When fellow pilgrim Cho Hakkai and monk Genjo Sanzo seek shelter, he attempts to devour them. Son Goku confronts him in battle and secures victory. After this defeat, Goku persuades him to abandon his man-eating ways and join their pilgrimage to Tianzhu to retrieve sacred Buddhist scriptures.

As part of the group, Sa Gojō participates in subsequent challenges. During the pilgrims' confrontation with King Gruesome at the Flaming Mountains, he aids in rescuing the captured Sanzo and Hakkai. He fights alongside Goku and the reformed imp Shoryu against Gruesome and his demon forces. His actions contribute to the group's success in freezing the volcanic lava and overcoming this trial.

Sa Gojō completes the pilgrimage to Tianzhu alongside Goku, Hakkai, and Sanzo. Upon receiving the scriptures from Buddha, he returns with the group to China.
