Movie
Description
Coco is a fairy from the Palmier Kingdom, where he serves as one of its princes. He has the appearance of a small, cream-colored creature with features resembling a fox or fennec fox, including large triangular ears, a salmon-red tuft on his head, round blue eyes with black lashes, fluffy fur around his neck, and a puffy tail. In his natural fairy form, he has a distinctive speech pattern, often ending his sentences with the sound "coco". Coco possesses a unique and significant ability to transform into a human at will. In this guise, he adopts the name Kokoda Koji and appears as a tall, handsome young man with short brown hair, typically dressed in a white shirt with blue trousers or a blue vest. He uses this human form to work as a teacher at the L'École des Cinq Lumières, the school attended by the main characters, allowing him to stay close to the Precure team and continue his mission on Earth.
Coco's personality shows notable variation between his two forms. As a human, he is generally calm, wise, and kind, acting as a responsible mentor figure. In contrast, his fairy form is much more energetic and expressive. Despite this duality, he is fundamentally a kind and caring individual who trusts others easily and is willing to go to great lengths, even revealing his true identity, to protect innocent people. He is deeply devoted to his friends and his kingdom, but this sense of responsibility can also make him prone to worry and guilt, especially concerning the fate of the Palmier Kingdom and his friend, Nuts. While generally gentle, he can become strict or angry when someone does something wrong or drastic. Coco also has some endearing weaknesses, including a great fondness for cream puffs and a very low tolerance for alcohol, becoming intoxicated after just a single sip.
Coco's primary motivation is the restoration of his homeland, the Palmier Kingdom, which was attacked and devastated. To this end, he traveled to the human world to search for the Dream Collet and the scattered Pinkies, magical items needed to save his kingdom and a friend. His role in the story is that of a guide and supporter for the Precure warriors, particularly the Yes! Pretty Cure 5 team. He uses his special ability to sense the energy of their enemies and the Pinkies, acting as an early warning system and helping to track down the items they need. Although his own combat abilities are low due to his Palmier heritage, his strategic and supportive role is vital to the team's success.
Throughout his journey, Coco forms several deep and important relationships. His most significant bond is with Nozomi Yumehara, the leader of the Precure team. What begins as a strong friendship and partnership gradually deepens into a romantic attachment, a rare development for a mascot character in the franchise. He is often protective of Nozomi and feels a sense of guilt for involving her in his dangerous quest, but he is also deeply inspired by her unwavering hope. His relationship with Nuts is equally crucial; they are best friends and fellow princes from the Palmier Kingdom. Their friendship is strained when they are first reunited, as Nuts has lost trust in others, but they gradually reconcile and become close allies once more, supporting each other in their duties. In the All Stars crossover film, Coco's role expands as he interacts with the wider cast of Precure fairies and warriors. He and Nuts are often portrayed as level-headed figures who quickly grasp the severity of the situation when the various fairy worlds begin merging with Earth. They take on a leadership role among the mascots, helping to explain the crisis and coordinating with the many Precure teams to protect the Prism Flower, the bridge between their worlds.
Coco's character undergoes significant development, particularly as he matures from a prince into a fully-fledged king. A pivotal moment is when he unlocks the power of his Palmier crown, allowing him to bestow the Cure Fleurets upon the Precure team, which enhances their abilities and formally marks his ascension to kingship. His personal development is also tied to his relationship with Nozomi, as he learns to balance the heavy responsibilities of his royal duties with his personal feelings, a conflict that is explored further in later sequel series like Kibou no Chikara ~Otona Pretty Cure '23~, where he ultimately proposes to her.
Beyond his transformation and sensory abilities, Coco has other notable powers. With his royal authority, he can grant power-ups to the Precure, as seen with the Cure Fleurets. In the film Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo!: Okashi no Kuni no Happy Birthday!, when placed under mind control, he demonstrates formidable combat skills on par with the Precure themselves. In a more lighthearted moment within the same movie, he and Nuts joke by using the power of Miracle Lights to temporarily transform into parody versions of Precure, with Coco becoming Cure Coco, the Cure of Cream Puffs.
