Funaho Masaki Jurai hails from Earth, born and raised in Japan. Her life changed when Juraian Prince Azusa, exploring the planet, intervened as bandits attacked her following his battle injuries sustained fighting the rogue scientist Kagato and his battleship Ryo-Ohki. Azusa courted Funaho and brought her to Jurai as his bride. This marriage elevated Funaho to become Jurai's first empress, a position met with deep prejudice from the nobility due to her Earthling origins and off-worlder status. Opposition intensified after the birth of her son, Prince Yosho, whom Azusa named his heir. To quell political dissent, Azusa amended Jurai's laws to permit multiple marriages, taking Misaki Kamiki Jurai as a second wife. Funaho offered divorce and a return to Earth, but Azusa refused, ensuring her status as first wife. Funaho gradually earned acceptance through her own merits and the steadfast support of Misaki; the two developed a sisterly bond, mirrored by their second-generation Royal Trees, Mizuho and Karin, capable of merging into a combined form. As Jurai's Minister of Intelligence and head of House Masaki, Funaho commands the planet's intelligence network. Her calm, dignified presence contrasts with Misaki's energy, yet her formidable staff combat skills make her one of the few capable of sparring evenly with her sister-wife. Leading the intelligence network enabled Funaho to uncover that her son Yosho, who departed Jurai centuries earlier pursuing the space pirate Ryoko, remained alive on Earth. Her investigations also revealed her great-grandson, Tenchi Masaki. She journeyed to Earth, reuniting with Yosho and seeing through his "Katsuhito" disguise, while also checking on her stepdaughters, Ayeka and Sasami. During this visit, she proposed to scientist Washu the mass production of Ryoko and Ryo-Ohki for Jurai's defense, citing their combined power as equivalent to a first-generation Royal Treeship. Washu declined, citing loyalty to Tenchi's trust and Ryoko's uniqueness. Funaho occasionally reveals a fiercer aspect, especially when provoked. After Yosho's departure, she responded to disparaging remarks about him from royals by drinking, leading to belligerent episodes where she used her staff skills to physically confront and thrash critics. This incident cemented her formidable reputation, and none have since attempted to intoxicate her. Her bonded first-generation Royal Tree, also named Funaho, stands planted near the Masaki Shrine on Earth. Originally Yosho's tree, it symbolizes her enduring connection to both Jurai and Earth.
