Description
Kaina is the protagonist of the story, a young man who has spent his entire life in a small, isolated village perched high above the world on the Canopy, an immense organic membrane suspended by colossal Orbital Spire Trees. This village, which he and the elderly residents believe to be the last surviving human settlement in the Canopy, has shaped nearly every aspect of his character. Kaina was orphaned shortly after birth; his mother succumbed to an illness worsened by a lack of nutrition following his delivery, and his father was killed by a giant insect while trying to find food to aid in her recovery. As a result, Kaina was raised by the village elders, becoming the youngest and only able-bodied person capable of hunting the giant insects that live within the Canopy, providing a vital source of food for the community.
Having no peers his own age, Kaina developed a quiet, kind, and responsible personality, but his isolation has made him socially awkward and unsure of how to act around people his own age when he finally encounters them. Despite his sheltered upbringing, he possesses a deep and persistent curiosity about the world below, the Great Snow Sea, often pondering its nature and refusing to believe that he and the elders are the last humans alive. This curiosity is matched by a remarkable memory and a unique skillset. Trained by the village Signkeeper, Kaina is one of the few people capable of deciphering the ancient written language of the past, a skill that proves invaluable throughout his journey. He also demonstrates an exceptional ability to recall detailed information, such as recreating a complex map of the Snow Sea from memory after the original was destroyed.
Kaina's life is irrevocably changed when he rescues Ririha, the princess of the land of Atland on the Snow Sea, who has journeyed upward in search of a mythical figure known as the Sage. Learning of the desperate water shortages and the threat of invasion from the neighboring empire of Valghia that her people face, Kaina’s innate empathy drives him to action. Accepting a mission from his village elders, a journey that means he can never return home, he guides Ririha back down to the surface using salvaged climbing gear and a small, versatile tool known as a bark cutter. While resembling a simple knife, this tool is in fact a highly durable and powerful laser device that becomes a signature part of his equipment, used for cutting, climbing, and even as a weapon in dire situations.
Upon reaching the Snow Sea, Kaina is immediately thrust into the geopolitical conflict between Atland and Valghia. His lack of exposure to human conflict makes him uneasy with violence and the willingness of others to sacrifice themselves. However, he is not naive; he quickly assesses the real danger and uses his practical, self-sufficient nature to focus on finding solutions to save lives rather than getting drawn into ideological battles. His primary motivation evolves from simply helping Ririha return home to a broader mission of saving her people and, eventually, understanding the nature of the decaying world itself. He becomes a key figure in brokering a tenuous peace between the warring kingdoms and leads a joint expedition toward the fabled Great Orbital Spire Tree, which is believed to hold the answers to the world's decline.
Throughout his journey, Kaina’s most significant relationship is with Ririha. They develop a deep bond of trust and mutual understanding, often knowing what the other is thinking or planning without words. He also gains crucial allies such as Yaona, Ririha's brother, and Orinoga, a warrior from Atland. Kaina's character development is seen in his transition from a lone survivor of a dying world to a unifying figure capable of inspiring cooperation between former enemies. In the concluding events depicted in the sequel film Star Sage, Kaina and Ririha reach the control center of the Great Orbital Spire Tree, discovering that the entire world is a terraforming project gone awry. His unique immunity to a defensive mind virus within the facility proves critical, allowing him to access the core systems and activate the final phase of the terraforming plan, which disperses the Great Snow Sea and replaces it with a global ocean. Following this world-saving act, Kaina helps survivors from both nations establish a new civilization, contributing his practical knowledge of agriculture. He eventually marries Ririha, solidifying their partnership and concluding his journey from a lonely boy on the Canopy to a key figure in the creation of a new world.
