Description
Kaina grew up as the youngest resident in a small village on the Canopy, an organic membrane suspended high above the planet's surface by massive Orbital Spire Trees. Believed to be the last settlement on the Canopy, its population consisted mainly of elderly individuals, leaving him isolated from peers and contributing to social awkwardness around those his own age. Orphaned shortly after birth – his mother succumbed to illness worsened by malnutrition, his father perished on a hunting trip attempting to get food for her recovery – this upbringing fostered a deep sense of responsibility. He hunted insects inhabiting the Canopy to provide sustenance for the villagers.
Trained by the village Signkeeper, Kaina developed literacy to decipher ancient texts, a rare ability in his world. He possessed exceptional memory retention, reconstructing Atland's detailed "Snow Sea map" from memory after the original burned. His life involved routine hunting and contemplation about survival on the distant Snow Sea below.
His existence shifted upon encountering Ririha, a princess from the surface nation of Atland, who ascended via a Floater. After rescuing her, he learned of dire conditions on the Snow Sea, where water scarcity fueled conflicts like Valghia's invasions of Atland. Motivated by empathy and a desire to aid her people, Kaina accepted the village elders' task to guide Ririha back to the surface. Equipped with salvaged climbing gear and a laser cutting tool, he embarked on a one-way descent with her.
During the descent, Kaina and Ririha exchanged histories and uncovered shared visions of an enigmatic entity called Light. Upon reaching the Snow Sea, Valghian forces captured them, though Atland's military later extracted Kaina. This immersed him in the geopolitical struggles of the surface world. His experiences led to efforts brokering peace between Atland and Valghia and a joint expedition toward the fabled Great Orbital Spire Tree, central to resolving the planetary crisis.
In the concluding events, Kaina and Ririha reached the Great Orbital Spire Tree's control center, discovering its purpose as part of an ancient terraforming project designed to restore Earth's environment. They activated the system, dispersing the Snow Sea and replacing it with a global ocean. Kaina's immunity to a defensive "mind virus" within the control room proved critical to accessing the terraforming mechanisms. Though some described his actions as stumbling haplessly into plot developments, they were instrumental in fulfilling the system's requirement for individuals deemed morally worthy to initiate restoration.
Following the terraforming, surviving populations from Atland and Valghia established a new civilization on an island formed by the Great Orbital Spire Tree's remnants. Kaina contributed practical knowledge like agricultural techniques for planting crops. He eventually married Ririha, solidifying their partnership beyond their world-saving mission.
Physically, Kaina has chin-length brown hair and hazel eyes. His personality reflects kindness, a willingness to assist others, and persistent curiosity about the world, though lifelong isolation resulted in initial awkwardness in social interactions, particularly with peers.
