Description
Koyomi Yamanaka is a 33-year-old unemployed individual, frequently implied to be a NEET, who resides with his younger cousin, Chise Asukagawa. He possesses brown hair with bangs that typically obscure his eyes, which are light blue when visible. His typical attire includes a light green jacket featuring black and yellow stripes on the sleeves, black sweatpants with yellow stripes, and orange sandals.
A significant regret from middle school shapes his background. He and his classmate Inamoto discovered a stash of money in an abandoned building. When she proposed using it to go out together, he refused and fled. This missed opportunity haunted him, contributing to his withdrawn adult lifestyle marked by lethargy and a lack of purpose. He spends most days isolated in his room, fixated on his computer.
His life shifts when Chise drags him out to witness floating buildings, leading to an encounter with the kaiju Shalbandes. During the attack, Dynazenon forcibly recruits him as a pilot alongside Gauma, Yomogi Asanaka, and Yume Minami. Gauma entrusts him with Dynastriker, one of the mecha's components. Koyomi initially participates under the pretense of potential employment and income.
Despite his outwardly lazy demeanor, Koyomi demonstrates perceptiveness and tactical skill. He quickly masters Dynastriker's controls and effectively analyzes enemy kaiju capabilities. His personal growth begins upon reconnecting with the now-married Inamoto as an adult. Though resentful of her husband, Arata, Koyomi overcomes his bitterness during a kaiju attack and saves Arata's life, recognizing the futility of dwelling on past regrets.
During a confrontation with the kaiju Garnix, Koyomi becomes psychologically trapped in his middle-school memory of Inamoto's proposal. With Yomogi's intervention, he rejects the fantasy of altering the past and returns to the present, gaining an S-shaped scar on his ankle as a permanent reminder of his resolve.
Following the final battle against Gagula, Koyomi actively seeks employment, discarding his NEET identity. He crafts a resume listing his experience as a Dynastriker pilot and attends multiple unsuccessful interviews. Ultimately, Arata assists him in securing a job. Three months later, Koyomi appears with a haircut and suit, symbolizing his ongoing integration into societal norms.
Trivia notes indicate his name's etymology derives from a classical Chinese poem about a hermit losing track of time in the mountains. His birthday appears as both March 10th on his resume and March 12th in official records, the latter date shared with the character Mujina. His residence in the film GRIDMAN UNIVERSE is depicted as Yuta Hibiki's home from the preceding series SSSS.GRIDMAN.
