Description
Shinichi Kudo, a 14-year-old high school student featured in "Detective Conan Magic File 2: The Case of the Mysterious Wall and the Black Lab", demonstrates his detective skills in an investigation set three years before his physical transformation. While practicing soccer in Beika Park, his athletic prowess draws attention and comparisons to player Hideo Akagi. During practice, Koichi Akimoto approaches Shinichi seeking witnesses to confirm his alibi for the morning his grandmother was murdered, explaining he was asleep drunk in the park. Shinichi infers Akimoto's purpose and spots two undercover police officers surveilling him. Based on Akimoto recalling a dog's bark and seeing "something black" like a dog near a wall, Shinichi deduces a woman walking her dog might have been present and could serve as an alibi witness. He commits to investigating, even planning to skip school.

While walking to school with Ran Mouri, Shinichi discusses the case. Ran suggests Akimoto might have clairvoyant abilities to explain his observations, prompting Shinichi to vehemently reject supernatural explanations, arguing they would eliminate the need for detectives or police. Ran counters that some mysteries remain unsolvable, leading to an unresolved argument that causes a temporary silence between them. Shinichi's investigation stalls initially when a local dog walker confirms she wasn't near Akimoto's location during the relevant time. Later, he encounters preschool children Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima (future Detective Boys members) during their outing. They recall seeing Akimoto while chasing a butterfly, but their young age makes their testimony unreliable for the police.

Contemplating the case at home, Shinichi interacts with his father Yusaku, who offers his violin to aid thinking. Shinichi refuses, dismissing the idea by stating Sherlock Holmes used his violin merely to pass time. While handling the violin case, Shinichi realizes its silhouette could resemble a dog, especially when viewed from a low angle by someone disoriented. Testing this, he has Akimoto and a policeman lie down to replicate the perspective. He then demonstrates that a woman carrying a guitar case, Soko Kabe, was misidentified as a "black dog" due to the similar shape combined with an actual distant dog bark. Kabe confirms seeing Akimoto asleep in the park at the specified time, establishing his alibi. This resolution later connects to another investigation involving Soko Kabe and singer Reiko Akiba three years afterward, foreshadowed when Shinichi and Ran hear Akiba singing "Amazing Grace".

The story depicts Shinichi's exceptional deductive reasoning, keen observation skills, persistence in investigations, reliance on logic over supernatural explanations, and willingness to challenge authority. His early methodology involves witness interviews, environmental reconstruction, and leveraging everyday observations. The incident also reveals aspects of his relationship with Ran, including their differing perspectives and his difficulty navigating personal disagreements despite their closeness.
