TV Special
Description
Ran Mōri is a main character in the anime special Meitantei Conan: Edogawa Conan Shissō Jiken -Chijō Saiaku no Futsukakan-. She is a high school student at Teitan High School and serves as the captain of its karate club. Her father, Kogoro Mōri, is a private detective, and her mother, Eri Kisaki, is a lawyer; her parents separated in her childhood, and she has lived with her father since then. In her mother's absence, Ran manages the Mōri household, taking care of the cooking, cleaning, and finances, and she also greets clients who come to her father's detective agency. She is the childhood friend and girlfriend of Shinichi Kudo, a gifted high school detective who vanished under mysterious circumstances, and she is the caretaker of Conan Edogawa, a young boy who came to live with her family. Unaware that Conan is actually Shinichi in a transformed body, Ran treats him like a younger brother.

In this special, Ran's involvement begins when Professor Agasa's bath is out of order, and she accompanies Conan and Ai Haibara to a public bath house. Conan sees something he should not have, then slips and hits his head, after which a suspicious man and his accomplice carry him off, claiming they will take him to a hospital. When Ran and Haibara search the nearby hospital and find no trace of him, a message from Shinichi reaches Ran, explaining that his injury was not serious and that he has gone to eat dinner with a man he knows. In truth, Conan has been drawn into a scheme in which he is fitted with a backpack of explosives, but Ran, trusting Shinichi's words, does not learn what has actually happened. Her search for the missing boy and her worry over his sudden disappearance shape her part of the story.

Ran's personality is defined by warmth and devotion. She is kind, patient, and nurturing, with a strong sense of justice and a deep respect for human life, even the lives of people who threaten her. She is also capable of great bravery and composure in dangerous situations. At the same time, she has a formidable temper; when angered, she can intimidate nearly anyone, and she has been known to lash out with her karate. She has an irrational fear of ghosts and horror themes, and she often cries when thinking about Shinichi's absence. Mature and self-sufficient for her age, she has effectively become the head of her household, keeping her often irresponsible father in line while caring for Conan.

Her main motivations are to remain faithful to Shinichi and wait for his return, to reunite her separated parents, and to protect the people around her. Her key relationships in the special are with Conan, whose safety she worries over, and with Ai Haibara, who joins her in the search. Her bond with Shinichi is central to the story, as her trust in his message prevents her from uncovering the danger Conan is in. Her development across the wider story sees her move from a girl quietly waiting for Shinichi into a confident young woman who actively protects those she loves, while her role here highlights how her caring, trusting nature is both her strength and the blind spot that keeps the truth hidden from her.

Ran's most notable ability is her martial arts skill. As a black belt and captain of her high school karate team, she has won championships at the prefectural and regional level and possesses extraordinary physical strength, capable of breaking down doors with her kicks and fighting off armed criminals barehanded. She also has sharp reflexes and keen observation, and she has occasionally suspected Conan's true identity, though she has always been convinced otherwise. In daily life, she is a skilled cook and manages all the household duties with competence.
