Description
Makoto is a driver for a struggling D-class Formula X racing team. Previously on the verge of quitting due to his team's lack of success, his fortunes change when the mysterious engineer Hayami Go offers him an experimental hyper-engine for his FX machine. Makoto seizes this opportunity to revitalize his career. He leads a small, rag-tag team consisting of Kaori (who harbors unexpressed feelings for him), Saburo (the primary mechanic), and Yoshio (a secondary pit crew member). Makoto demonstrates a gung-ho, determined attitude, frequently pushing his engine to its limits. He initially idolizes top-tier A-class racer Natsuo Sawai but becomes personally motivated to defeat Sawai after witnessing the racer's arrogant dismissal of Go's engine and D-class competitors.
The core conflict centers on the annual FX Open Cup, a tournament open to all classes where the winner earns automatic promotion to A-class. Makoto enters using Go's engine, which Sawai's corporate backers claim is defective. He races for his team's advancement, to prove the engine's worth, and to validate Go's skills against Sawai's criticism.
During the Open Cup race itself, Makoto directly competes with Sawai using wheel-heeled, humanoid mech-like racing machines (FXes). Race rules permit limited combat between both machines and riders. Makoto demonstrates aggression and skill, including physically kicking Sawai during a maneuver. His performance ultimately proves the engine's capability and successfully challenges the established racing hierarchy. The story concludes with Makoto proving himself and his team's potential through his performance in the Open Cup, remaining a self-contained narrative.
