Description
Admiral Willibald Joachim von Merkatz served as a seasoned military commander in the Galactic Empire. During the Battle of Astarte, he operated under Reinhard von Lohengramm as one of five oversight officers. While peers openly criticized Reinhard’s tactics, Merkatz remained reserved yet effective against enemy fleets.

Duke Otto von Braunschweig later coerced Merkatz into commanding the Lippstadt Rebellion by threatening his family. Merkatz accepted conditional on absolute control, anticipating Braunschweig’s interference. He advocated consolidating forces at Geiersberg Fortress for strategic defense but was overruled in favor of dispersed deployments. His authority eroded when Braunschweig permitted Marquis Littenheim to withdraw a third of their forces for political reasons and declined to discipline insubordinate nobles. Despite these constraints, Merkatz secured the alliance’s sole military victory by repelling Admiral Reuenthal from the Schann-tau system. He further rescued Braunschweig during a reckless offensive, upholding professionalism amid collapsing command.

Following the Lippstadt Alliance’s collapse, Merkatz contemplated suicide rather than serve Reinhard, citing loyalty to the Goldenbaum Dynasty. His aide Bernhard von Schneider persuaded him to defect to the Free Planets Alliance instead. After briefly serving Kaiser Erwin Josef II’s exiled court, Merkatz offered his expertise to Admiral Yang Wen-li during Reinhard’s invasion.

Within the Alliance, Merkatz proved a critical tactical asset. Commanding Iserlohn Fortress in Yang’s absence, he repelled Imperial admirals Müller and Kempf. His counterattack lured enemy grenadiers into transport vessels for destruction, forced Müller’s flagship into vulnerability, and coordinated flanking maneuvers with Admirals Attenborough and Huu to decisively repel the assault. Post-surrender at Vermilion, Yang tasked him with preserving a hidden fleet; this force later formed the core of the revived Yang Fleet. After Yang’s death, Merkatz transferred allegiance to Julian Mintz out of loyalty to the fleet’s officers.

Merkatz died aged 63 during the Battle of Shiva when Admiral Ernst von Eisenach’s fleet targeted his flagship. Bernhard von Schneider returned his remains to the Empire.

Throughout his career, Merkatz employed cautious, calculated strategies favoring defensive consolidation over aggression. He prioritized subordinate welfare and upheld duty despite untenable commands. Though prone to underestimating his own abilities, his experience and tactical adaptability earned respect across Imperial and Alliance forces.
