Description
Alex Cazerne served as a military officer in the Free Planets Alliance, rising to vice admiral. His early career included commanding in 788 UC (479 IC / 3588 CE), where he assigned young officer Yang Wen-li to investigate the Tuesday Correspondence letters alleging the murder of war hero Bruce Ashbey. This assignment directed Yang to a prisoner-of-war camp on Econia; Cazerne later facilitated Yang's return to Heinessen to report his findings.
Cazerne married Hortense Milbelle, daughter of a former superior, in February 789 UC (480 IC / 3589 CE). They had two daughters: Charlotte Phyllis Cazerne and an unnamed younger daughter. He arranged for the orphan Julian Mintz to become Yang's adopted son, expressing intentions for Julian to eventually marry Charlotte.
By 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE), Cazerne held flag officer rank. He assisted Yang, commander of the new 13th Fleet, in securing the elite Rosen Ritter infantry unit for the Iserlohn Fortress assault. Following the fortress's capture in May 796 UC, Cazerne became chief rear staff officer for the Alliance's Imperial Territory invasion, managing logistics. The invasion failed when Imperial scorched-earth tactics caused crippling supply shortages. Accepting blame, Cazerne was reassigned to a frontier base before Yang secured his transfer to Iserlohn Fortress as chief administrator.
During the Alliance Civil War in early 797 UC (488 IC / 3597 CE), Cazerne served as Iserlohn's interim commander while Yang suppressed rebellions. Later that year, he accepted the defection of Imperial High Admiral Merkatz. In early 798 UC (489 IC / 3598 CE), Cazerne hosted a dinner celebrating Julian's promotion, expressing concerns to Yang about political threats from Supreme Council Chairman Job Trunicht and urging Julian to protect Yang. When Yang was summoned to Heinessen for a government inquiry in March 798 UC, Cazerne again assumed command of Iserlohn. During the Geiersburg Fortress attack, he initially advocated defense but later authorized aggressive tactics under Walter von Schönkopf's influence, holding the fortress until Yang's return.
Following the Free Planets Alliance's surrender after the Battle of Vermillion, Cazerne remained with the reduced Alliance Fleet as acting secretary of logistics. He participated in covert planning for a Merkatz-led resistance movement. During the Lennenkampf affair in summer 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE), he resigned when Yang fled imprisonment, rejecting a promotion offer from Admiral Rockwell. Cazerne joined Yang's loyalists, evacuating to a hidden base. He later assisted relocating civilians and military personnel during the abandonment of Iserlohn Fortress.
Cazerne mastered logistics and administration, frequently described as an efficient bureaucrat. He maintained a close professional and personal relationship with Yang Wen-li throughout his career.
