Description
Kiiko Shimazu, a quiet third-grader, arrives in a 1955 rural town with her father, a factory physician, still shadowed by her mother’s recent death. Clutching her mother’s perfumed belongings and vibrant pencils as fragile lifelines, her urban refinement and muted sorrow alienate her from the boisterous local children. Her isolation fractures when Shinko, a spirited classmate with a gift for weaving tales of the town’s past, draws her into whimsical adventures and the camaraderie of the Destiny Squad.

Kiiko’s struggle to visualize Shinko’s historical stories mirrors her stifled grief, contrasting with her friend’s vibrant imagination. This tension intertwines with the fable of Nagiko, a solitary Heian-era princess whose loneliness echoes Kiiko’s own. Immersed in Shinko’s playful reenactments, Kiiko tentatively channels Nagiko’s spirit, bridging her inner turmoil with symbolic rebirth.

Her transformation unfolds through mud-stained play, shared mishaps like accidental indulgence in spiked chocolates, and weathered goodbyes as peers depart—including Shinko’s eventual move. Each fleeting joy and loss etches resilience into Kiiko, who stays rooted in the town, her journey closing with quiet acceptance of life’s impermanence and an unspoken embrace of belonging.
