Description
Japan manifests as a personified nation representing the country. He appears as a relatively short, slim man with black hair and dark brown eyes, typically clad in a white naval uniform featuring black and gold accents, sometimes opting for more ornate versions for formal events. A katana is always sheathed at his left hip. His height is visually variable but consistently shorter than many others.

His personality is reserved, polite, and introverted, profoundly shaped by roughly 250 years of national isolation where contact was limited solely to the Netherlands. This history fosters discomfort with physical proximity or touch and significant unfamiliarity with Western cultures. He exhibits "old man" tendencies in behavior and interests, favoring quiet pursuits like bonsai cultivation, cleaning, caring for pets, making soba noodles, and reading manga such as Shonen Jump. Outwardly calm, he possesses a rarely triggered capacity for intense anger, usually experiencing only mild irritation or "unpleasant feelings." He harbors a strong aversion to cockroaches and displays an otaku inclination, preferring fictional "2D girls" over real relationships while secretly owning erotic woodblock prints.

Discovered as a young child by China, who taught him kanji and provided temporary care, Japan later rejected this bond, attacking China with his katana and leaving a permanent scar that fractured their relationship. Ending his isolation under pressure from America's arrival, he gradually formed international ties, eventually joining the Axis Powers with Germany and Italy during World War II. His modern relationships are complex: mutual bafflement yet shared technological interests with America; respect mixed with discomfort around Italy's affection; professional rapport with Germany; and antagonism from frequently harassing Korea. He shares tea ceremonies with England and bonds with Greece over mutual appreciation for cats.

During the events of "Paint it, White!," Japan joins the global response to the Pictonian alien invasion, which drains Earth's color and emotion. He attends the initial World 8 meeting and later infiltrates the alien spacecraft with allied nations, disguised in a white suit crafted from Italy's flag material. On the mission, he proposes demonstrating cultural traditions to pacify the aliens and performs a Bon Festival dance, temporarily intriguing them despite being labeled "odd." He survives the ensuing battle where most nations are transformed into Pictonians, witnessing the resolution triggered by Italy's actions. Switzerland and Liechtenstein remain unaffected due to their neutrality barrier throughout the crisis.

Japan owns pets including a white dog named Pochi (resembling an Akita or Shiba Inu), a rabbit, and a guinea pig, reflecting his affinity for soft, fluffy animals. He also demonstrates residual spiritual awareness, expressing concern about disturbing ancestral spirits.
