TV-Series
Description
Kazuya Kagami is a human teenager designated a Taboo Child due to unusual circumstances surrounding his birth. During his mother Kanaka Kagami's pregnancy, she was attacked by a mysterious black fog while on a mountain mission. Upon birth, Kazuya radiated a powerful spiritual presence that naturally attracted curses, leading to his classification. To stabilize this, the deity Kukuri instructed Kanaka to transfer ownership of her tsukumogami partner Kiriha, a spirit inhabiting a kimono obi, to Kazuya, suppressing his curse-attracting aura.
Initially presenting as unremarkable and average, Kazuya is characterized by kindness and friendliness, though easily annoyed by perceived nuisances like Kiriha's forceful behavior upon meeting. He harbors profound responsibility and guilt over his Taboo Child status, feeling accountable for the amasogi manifesting around him and the resulting curse backlashes affecting others. Despite reluctance, he selflessly accepts the role of Kamioka's exorcist to protect people.
His personality includes contrasting traits: possessing strong perverted urges typical for his age, he exercises near-inhuman self-control to suppress them, resisting daily temptations from Kiriha and others like Kokuyō and Sunao Sumeragi. This restraint stems from a desire to preserve existing relationship dynamics, fearing acting on impulses would alter his bond with Kiriha. He remains oblivious to indirect romantic advances from characters like Chisato Chikaishi or Sunao, though not inherently dense socially.
A pivotal shift occurs after the Mayoiga Revolt arc. Regaining sealed memories of his past and witnessing Kiriha's destruction and Kukuri's death plunges him into despair but ultimately fuels fierce determination to prevent further loss. He vows to destroy the amasogi he inadvertently created by defeating his mother Kanaka. This resolve transforms him into a more proactive and uncompromising individual—maintaining core kindness but exhibiting heightened seriousness. He carries Kiriha's remains constantly, reacting with rage if others touch them, confronts those challenging his beliefs, and remains intensely focused on his goals.
His combat abilities revolve around curse manipulation and tsukumogami partnership. As a Taboo Child, he emits a cursing aura affecting his surroundings, capable of triggering catastrophic "curse backlashes" rippling across entire towns. Foundational techniques include "Eight Fold" attacks and "Cloth Manipulation" via Kiriha. He achieves heightened states like "Ascension" or "Domination" through fusion with Kiriha, initially leaving him immobilized for a day afterward—a weakness later mitigated using curses. Capabilities expand to include sound nullification, duplication, life manipulation, and non-physical interaction. He masters "Spiritual Intercourse," transferring spiritual energy through intimate physical contact without intercourse, leveraging opposing yin-yang energies.
Kazuya's relationships define key development aspects. His bond with Kiriha evolves from annoyance to deep mutual reliance and affection; he values her as irreplaceable, their fusion symbolizing synergy. He shares a close but complex familial tie with his sister Kasumi, who volunteered as their mother's successor to shield him, displaying brotherly possessiveness. His respect for tsukumogami as equals extends to allies like Kyōka, who partners with him after Kiriha's destruction, and Kukuri, the water goddess he deeply admired. Multiple female characters, including Chisato, Sunao, Kokuyō, and Kukuri, develop romantic feelings for him, though he rarely acknowledges them overtly.
His backstory reveals early displays of potential: at age six, he instinctively created an amasogi from rocks to kill an aberration, prompting Kanaka to train him alongside Kasumi. During childhood baths, Kasumi taught him fondling techniques under the guise of "pleasing women," leading him to innocently repeat these acts on Kukuri and Kiriha, believing them important. Later, he secretly created the tsukumogami Azami by imbuing a black obi with curses and power, training with her to surpass Kanaka's strength. A critical moment involved comforting Kanaka during depression, promising to grow strong enough to fight her as an equal—a moment moving listeners like Kukuri and Kasumi to tears.
