Description
Batako-san works as Uncle Jam's assistant in his bakery, baking alongside him while managing cleaning, laundry, and bread deliveries. Her skills extend beyond the kitchen; she expertly stitches and sews, frequently repairing the torn capes of Anpanman and other heroes to ensure they can still fly. She witnessed Anpanman's creation in the series' first episode and helped raise him with Uncle Jam, providing a maternal presence. This care includes actively maintaining Anpanman's well-being, assisting Uncle Jam in replacing his head when damaged and regularly mending his cape during weakness. Her kindness also extends to Cheese, the bakery dog: she named him, advocated for his adoption, interprets his barks, and often teams up with him—and sometimes Uncle Jam—for deliveries. Historically, she was depicted in a long-distance relationship with Omusubiman, though this storyline is no longer prominent. Early concept art proposed an alternative origin where she would be found as a baby in the woods by a young Anpanman, but this idea was discarded, establishing her character as older than Anpanman. She appears in a minor supporting role in the 2017 film "Soreike! Anpanman: Buruburu no Takarasagashi Daibōken!", maintaining her established role and design. Her consistent appearance features rosy cheeks, black eyes, a small round nose, and spiky black hair usually under a chef's hat, typically dressed in blue overalls over a white vest. Despite her human-like appearance, the series setting features almost no actual humans. Her personality is characterized by kindness, politeness, consistent optimism, and a strong work ethic, with arguments being rare.
