Batako-san, also known as Butterko, is the primary assistant in Uncle Jam's bakery. She witnessed Anpanman's birth in the series' first episode and, together with Uncle Jam, helped raise him as part of their family, serving as a consistent maternal figure throughout his life. Her responsibilities encompass baking, cleaning, laundry, and delivering goods, reflecting her hardworking and industrious nature. She is characteristically kind, polite, and optimistic, rarely engaging in arguments. Beyond baking, she possesses significant expertise in stitching and sewing. This skill designates her as the one who mends torn capes for Anpanman and other heroes, and she also creates items like dresses. She is frequently the person who replaces Anpanman's damaged or depleted head with a new one baked by Uncle Jam, a critical process for restoring his strength. Her relationship with Cheese, the dog living in the bakery, is notably close; she named him, advocated to keep him, and often translates his barking. They are regularly seen together delivering bread. A past long-distance relationship with Omusubiman was referenced but not elaborated upon in later series developments. According to official sources, Batako-san possesses a human-like appearance, creating a notable contrast within the Anpanman world where little to no humans exist. An early concept depicted her being found in the woods as a baby by a young Anpanman, but this backstory was discarded, resulting in her character being established as older than Anpanman. Despite her dedication, she is prone to forgetting things.
