Description
Baikinman is the main antagonist of the Soreike! Anpanman franchise, serving as a constant threat in the 1995 film Soreike! Anpanman: Yūreisen o Yattsukero!!. He is an anthropomorphic germ whose name is derived from the Japanese word for bacteria, baikin. He comes from the Germ Planet and, according to some accounts, arrived on Earth following the same shooting stars that gave birth to the hero Anpanman, making them opposing forces who appeared at roughly the same time.
His personality is defined by arrogance, theatricality, and a deep-seated need for attention and recognition. He speaks with an exaggerated sense of self-importance, famously using the pompous pronoun ore-sama to refer to himself. His signature, manic battle cry is Ha-hi-hu-he-ho. He is a classic ham villain, delighting in his own schemes and proclaiming his evil intentions loudly. At his core, Baikinman is a harmless villain whose primary motivation is to defeat Anpanman, spread germs, and generally spoil the happiness of others. He takes pleasure in playing tricks, stealing food, and bullying those weaker than himself. However, his ambition is less about true malice and more about the joy of causing mischief and being a dramatic nuisance.
In Yūreisen o Yattsukero!!, Baikinman takes on the persona of Captain Baikinman. In this story, he conspires with the scientist Dr. Hiyari to steal a white horse named Marin. Dr. Hiyari creates a ghost ship crewed with monsters, and together they capture the heroine Rollpanna. Baikinman then uses Dr. Hiyari's technology to steal the magokoro grass, the source of Rollpanna's kind heart, transforming her into the villainous Black Rollpanna. With his new ally and the ghost ship, he launches an assault on the town, representing a more significant and direct threat than in a typical episode of the television series.
His key relationships are central to his character. His primary dynamic is with his nemesis, Anpanman, whom he constantly schemes to defeat. He is also frequently accompanied by his partner in crime, Dokin-chan. In this film, she briefly betrays him, helping Shokupanman escape to save Anpanman, which contributes to Baikinman's eventual downfall. Despite her selfishness, he generally cares for her like a sibling. He also commands a legion of tiny, purple, mold-like minions known as Kabirunrun. A significant aspect of this film is his manipulation of Rollpanna, using her as a weapon, which highlights his willingness to exploit others for his own gain.
Baikinman possesses several notable abilities. He is a gadgeteer genius who builds a vast array of machines, including his personal UFO, a flying saucer equipped with various weapons and tools. He has small wings on his back that allow him to fly for short distances, though he often forgets this ability or relies on his machines instead. His most famous weakness is a vulnerability to soap and water; being cleaned causes him to shrink to the size of a small fly and temporarily lose his power, though he can recover his normal form. He also has an overly long, prehensile tongue that he uses as a weapon or to snatch food. A small purple dot on his chest is confirmed to be a microphone that amplifies his already loud voice.
In terms of development, Baikinman is a static character who follows a predictable pattern of defeat. In the film, his plan ultimately fails. After Dokin-chan's betrayal and a direct confrontation with the heroes, he is defeated and sent flying, a comedic and non-lethal punishment that is the standard outcome for his schemes. He ends the film crashing into Dr. Hiyari's castle, having failed to conquer the town or destroy Anpanman, ensuring the status quo is preserved for the next adventure.
