Description
Baikinman originated from Baikin Planet, arriving on Earth inside an egg that hatched on the same day that Anpanman was born. This event forged an intrinsic connection between them as opposing forces. His appearance is anthropomorphic and fly-like, featuring a black furry body, light pink eyes, purple lips and nose, two antennae, insectoid wings, a zigzag-shaped tail, and a notably slimy blue tongue. The black coating on his body is often interpreted as mold or mildew, which serves as a direct contrast to Anpanman’s bread-based head.

In terms of personality, Baikinman is characterized by his rudeness, loudness, impulsivity, and pronounced narcissism. He frequently refers to himself with the excessively pompous pronoun ore-sama and has constructed his own fortress, Baikin Castle, in his own image. He professes to be a scientific genius, though his inventions are often eccentric and strange. His obsession with defeating Anpanman is all-consuming, as he views this rivalry as the very purpose of his birth. When not engaged in elaborate schemes, he is often motivated by simple gluttony, frequently attempting to steal food. Despite his declaration of being a being who knows no love, he occasionally displays a softer, more complex side. The series creator has stated that deep down, Baikinman wishes for a normal life, a desire that is constantly at odds with the role he was born to play.

Key relationships define much of Baikinman’s actions. His primary enemy is Anpanman, whom he was born to destroy and sabotage. Although he is almost always defeated, he proves to be remarkably resilient, persistently returning for another confrontation. In rare instances, he has shown hesitation or even offered reluctant cooperation against a greater threat. His closest partner is Dokin-chan, for whom he harbors unrequited romantic feelings. He strives endlessly to please her, despite her affections lying with Shokupanman. Baikinman is also a creator, most notably of Franken Robo Kun, a robot intended to be a powerful weapon. However, Franken Robo Kun possesses a gentle disposition and is unsuited for combat, leading Baikinman to avoid him, though a subtle fondness between the two has grown over time. He also commands other germ allies, such as the Kabirunrun, to help spread mold and chaos.

In the specific story of Yumeneko no Kuni no Nyanii, Baikinman serves as the catalyst for the film’s central conflict. The plot revolves around the appearance of the Dream Suisei, a comet that appears once a century and causes everyone on Earth to share the same dream. While Melonpanna is caring for a magical kitten named Nyanii who hatched from a mysterious egg, the real trouble begins when Baikinman inadvertently awakens the evil monster Muuma. This action escalates the situation from a personal struggle over loss and letting go into a full-scale crisis that requires the intervention of the heroes. His role is that of an antagonistic force whose carelessness unleashes a greater evil upon the dream world.

Baikinman possesses several notable abilities and vulnerabilities. His primary weakness is soap or any form of cleansing agent. Contact with soap causes his black mold-like coating to melt away, revealing a white or bone-colored body underneath, and often shrinks him down to the size of a fly. This vulnerability is a direct thematic contrast to Anpanman’s weakness to getting his head wet or dirty. To compensate for his physical limitations, Baikinman relies heavily on his intellect as a mechanic. He frequently deploys complex technology in his schemes, piloting a personal UFO and constructing an array of giant robots and weapons, many of which are designed in his own likeness.

Over the course of the broader franchise, Baikinman has seen notable development. Early depictions focused more heavily on his filthiness and malevolent schemes involving germs and disease. Later portrayals have shown him engaging in more generalized mischief and even practicing basic hygiene, such as brushing his teeth and tidying his room, likely to set a better example for young viewers. In various films, including the 2024 movie Baikinman to Ehon no Lulun, his role has been explored with more nuance, at one point temporarily trapping him in a magical picture book where he was forced to pursue heroism. These explorations highlight the duality of his character as a persistent villain who, despite his role, cannot be simply dismissed as purely evil.
