Meiken Cheese, commonly recognized as Cheese the Wise Dog or Cheese the Super Watchdog, is a petite, light-brown canine distinguished by rabbit-like ears and a dark brown-tipped tail. Rescued as a stray puppy by Anpanman during a forest patrol, he was adopted into the bakery, becoming a permanent resident. Batako, a bakery assistant, christened him following his rescue.

Endowed with sharp intelligence, Cheese grasps human language and reacts purposefully, conveying thoughts through barks interpreted by companions familiar with his "wise dog" persona. His responsibilities include operating the Anpanman-go vehicle, detecting SOS signals, and joining rescue operations. Though later episodes feature him walking upright on two legs, he resumes quadrupedal postures when seated or resting.

Cheese’s personality merges daring heroics with playful antics. He confronts dangers head-on to aid Anpanman, frequently transporting spare heads for the hero. Conversely, his lazy side surfaces in chore avoidance, complemented by a ravenous appetite that devours meals rapidly. His tracking prowess, fueled by an acute sense of smell, pinpoints targets through scent trails.

While his pre-rescue past remains undefined, Cheese’s identity centers on his bond with Anpanman and the bakery. He maintains a close friendship with Butterko and romantic feelings for Rare Cheese, a cheesecake-themed character. Early concepts included brief human speech punctuated by a "woof," later discarded for consistent nonverbal expression.

Cheese persists as a loyal, humorous fixture across all media. His gradual shift to occasional bipedalism blends anthropomorphic traits with innate canine mannerisms.
