Description
Meiken Cheese is a canine resident of Uncle Jam's bakery. His story began as a hungry, abandoned puppy found crying in a forest during Anpanman's first patrol. Rescued by Anpanman, who shared part of his own head to feed him, Cheese was brought to the bakery and named by Batako-san. He permanently lives in a loaf-shaped doghouse on the bakery premises.
Physically, Cheese is a small, light brown dog marked by distinctive short, rabbit-shaped ears and a dark brown tail tip. Early manga and picture book art depicted his ears in a darker brown than his body. His movement evolved throughout the series, shifting from primarily traveling on four legs to predominantly walking upright on two legs in later portrayals, though he retains typical canine sitting and sleeping postures.
Cheese demonstrates notable intelligence, fully understanding human language and competently performing tasks alongside others. While incapable of verbal speech, he communicates through barks. The bakery inhabitants and Anpanman's allies consistently understand his vocalizations, attributed to their close bond and his status as a "wise dog." An early manga version featured him speaking in sentences followed by "woof," but this approach was discontinued after the television anime debuted, solidifying barking as his sole vocal communication.
His personality blends bravery, helpfulness, and a large appetite with occasional laziness regarding chores and a tendency towards dramatic, silly behavior often used for comic relief. He shows fierce loyalty and courage, frequently rushing into danger to aid Anpanman. A recurring duty involves transporting or throwing Anpanman's replacement heads during emergencies. Within the bakery, he assists with baking tasks and deliveries, often operating the Anpanman-go vehicle. His established abilities include exceptional olfactory senses for tracking and acute hearing, enabling him to detect distant SOS signals early.
Cheese shares a particularly close relationship with bakery assistant Batako-san. He also maintains a romantic connection with a character named Rare Cheese. His exact dog breed remains officially unidentified.
