Description
Meiken Cheese, alternately recognized as Cheese the Wise Dog or Cheese the Super Watchdog, is a light-brown canine distinguished by short rabbit-like ears and a dark-brown-tipped tail. Rescued as a stray puppy by Anpanman in the TV series' debut episode, he was relocated to a bakery and christened by Batako. His residence—a loaf-shaped doghouse near the bakery—positions him near his closest companion, Butterko.

Originally quadrupedal, Cheese evolved to walk upright while retaining signature canine mannerisms. He actively supports bakery operations, piloting the Anpanman go-kart and answering distress calls. Though communicating solely through barks, his reputation for wisdom and deep bonds with others render his intentions universally understood.

Balancing valor with humor, Cheese fearlessly aids Anpanman in crises yet occasionally shirks mundane tasks. His exceptional olfactory senses enable precise tracking of individuals. Expanding responsibilities later included transporting Anpanman’s spare head and joining strategic missions.

The 2004 short film *Tsukikoto Shiratama〜Tokimeki Dancing〜* features Cheese among an ensemble cast, though his specific narrative contributions remain unspecified. His origin story persists unchanged across adaptations, anchored solely to his forest rescue.

Romantic ties link him to Rare Cheese, a cheesecake-themed character, while collaborative partnerships define his rapport with fellow bakery allies. Early developmental drafts briefly tested limited speech capabilities for Cheese, though these were abandoned in favor of nonverbal expression. Artistic depictions vary slightly between media, with manga and illustrated books presenting darker ear shading than animated versions.
