Movie
Description
Meiken Cheese is a small, light-brown dog with short, rabbit-like ears and a dark brown tip on his tail. He is a main character who lives at Uncle Jam's bakery and appears in almost every episode of the series, including the film Soreike! Anpanman: Tsumiki Shiro no Himitsu.
Cheese's background is rooted in an act of kindness. He was rescued as a starving puppy by a young Anpanman during one of his patrols in the forest. Anpanman offered the hungry dog a part of his own head, which formed a deep and lasting bond between them. After being saved, Cheese was taken to the bakery where the character Batako gave him his name.
In terms of personality, Cheese is a loyal and brave companion, often charging into dangerous situations to help Anpanman and his friends. He serves as a source of comic relief, known for being over-dramatic and silly at times. He has a very large appetite and is known to gulp down food hungrily. Despite sometimes being lazy and trying to get out of doing chores around the bakery, he is a dependable figure who can be counted on in an emergency.
Cheese plays a key supportive role in the story. He helps with the baking at Uncle Jam's bakery, often drives the Anpanman-gō vehicle, and is typically the first to notice an SOS signal due to his keen senses. One of his most important duties is to carry and deliver replacement heads for Anpanman, allowing the hero to continue fighting. While he primarily walks on two legs in the series, he still retains canine habits like sitting and sleeping in a loaf-shaped doghouse outside the bakery.
He shares significant relationships with several characters. His closest bond is with Anpanman, his rescuer and hero. He is also close friends with Batako and is often seen accompanying Melonpanna. Cheese has a romantic interest named Rare Cheese. At one point, he was depicted as a love rival with another character, Camembert-kun, over Rare Cheese, but they eventually became friends.
Cheese exhibits several notable abilities. As a dog, he has an exceptional sense of smell and hearing, which makes him excellent at tracking down others by scent or detecting faint distress signals. He demonstrates great intelligence, as he can fully understand human language, but he communicates exclusively through barks, which the other characters intuitively understand. In very early stories, the creator briefly experimented with giving Cheese limited speech, but this practice was discontinued.
In the film Soreike! Anpanman: Tsumiki Shiro no Himitsu, Cheese appears in his established role as a loyal friend and helper. He accompanies Anpanman and the others as they discover a mysterious castle made of blocks, face challenges, and work to stop the villain Baikinman from using the castle's power for his own purposes. While the film focuses on new characters like the castle's protector, Tsumikiko, Cheese maintains his consistent role within the group, providing support and embodying the themes of friendship and teamwork that are central to the story.
