Description
Meiken Cheese, often called Cheese the wise dog or Cheese the super watchdog, began as a hungry, lost puppy discovered crying alone in the forest. Anpanman rescued him during his very first patrol, sharing part of his own head to ease the puppy's starvation. Anpanman then brought him to the bakery, where Batako-san named him Cheese. He permanently lives in a loaf-shaped doghouse on the bakery grounds. Physically, Cheese is a small, light brown dog with distinctive short rabbit-shaped ears and a dark brown tail tip. Early manga and picture books depicted his ears as darker brown than his body. While he now often stands upright on two legs, he retains normal canine sitting and sleeping habits, moving beyond his initial four-legged posture. His personality mixes bravery with comedic flair, providing comic relief through over-dramatic and silly antics. Despite occasional laziness, especially when dodging chores, he fearlessly charges into danger to aid Anpanman. He has a notably large appetite, often gulping food hungrily. Though unable to speak, his barks are fully understood by bakery residents and Anpanman's allies. Early stories briefly featured him using words followed by "woof," but this shifted to bark-only communication. His primary ability is an exceptionally sharp sense of smell, letting him track scents, locate individuals, and frequently detect SOS signals first. At the bakery, he assists with baking, deliveries, and other tasks, often operating the Anpanman-go vehicle. A recurring critical role involves transporting or throwing Anpanman's replacement heads in emergencies. His relationships include a close friendship with Batako-san and a romantic bond with Rare Cheese. In narratives like "Shabondama no Purun," he actively drives plots, such as finding a bubble performer’s lost flute and initiating its return amid conflicts involving Baikinman. His exact dog breed remains officially unidentified.
