Description
Meiken Cheese recurs throughout the Anpanman franchise, featuring in multiple media such as the 2019 film *Soreike! Anpanman Kirameke! Ice no Kuni no Vanilla-hime*. His story begins in the main series when a young Anpanman, on his first patrol, discovered the starving puppy in the forest. Anpanman offered part of his own head to feed the hungry pup, forging their deep bond. Cheese was then taken to Uncle Jam's bakery, where Batako gave him his name.
Residing at the bakery, Cheese acts as a loyal companion and helper. He is known as a "wise dog," understanding human language and communicating primarily through barks that others intuitively grasp. His personality mixes bravery with comedic traits: he assists in perilous situations, delivers Anpanman's replacement heads, and possesses a large appetite, though he occasionally displays laziness, especially to avoid chores.
Physically, Cheese is a small, light-brown dog with distinctive rabbit-like ears and a dark brown tail tip. His design evolved from initially walking on four legs to predominantly standing bipedally, though he retains canine sitting and sleeping habits. He lives in a loaf-shaped doghouse outside the bakery.
His abilities include exceptional hearing and scent-tracking, enabling him to detect faint distress signals or locate individuals. At the bakery, he participates in baking tasks and drives the Anpanman-go vehicle. While *Princess Vanilla of Ice Cream Land* details no film-specific development for Cheese, his consistent role involves supporting Anpanman's missions and confronting threats alongside fellow heroes.
Cheese maintains close friendships with Butterko (Batako) and Melonpanna. His backstory occasionally references a romantic interest named Rare Cheese. Creator Takashi Yanase once experimented with giving Cheese limited speech, but this was discontinued, preserving his non-verbal communication. His breed remains officially unspecified.
Across all appearances, Cheese remains a fixture in the series' ensemble, embodying loyalty, providing comic relief, and offering dependable aid in emergencies.
