Movie
Description
Nobita Nobi is a 10-year-old Japanese elementary school student living in Tokyo's Nerima Ward. His family includes parents Nobi Nobisuke and Tamako; his future descendants are his son Nobisuke and great-great-grandson Sewashi. He consistently struggles academically, facing frequent reprimands from teachers and disappointment from his mother. His limited athletic abilities often frustrate peers during sports. A cycle of after-school napping, staying up late, and subsequent tardiness or exhaustion hinders his daily life.

Significant contradictions define his personality. Prominent traits include laziness, procrastination, avoiding responsibility, and giving up easily. He frequently depends on Doraemon's futuristic gadgets to solve problems, often using them selfishly for revenge against bullies Takeshi "Gian" Goda and Suneo Honekawa or to impress his crush, Shizuka Minamoto. This misuse regularly causes unintended negative outcomes. Despite these flaws, he demonstrates kindness, generosity, and compassion, especially towards distressed animals or people facing hardship. He possesses moments of courage and life-risking willingness, particularly evident in feature-length films where he helps save communities or civilizations. Underlying this is persistent low self-esteem, self-doubt, and feelings of inadequacy, often comparing himself unfavorably to others like the gifted Hidetoshi Dekisugi.

Notable positive traits include exceptional marksmanship and proficiency in string figures (cat's cradle). He exhibits significant creativity, finding unconventional uses for Doraemon's gadgets to develop new sports or solve complex problems, indicating intellectual potential often masked by laziness. He occasionally achieves good academic results or demonstrates a strong work ethic, especially when motivated.

Relationships are central. His profound, interdependent bond with Doraemon involves deep friendship and support, though Doraemon often expresses annoyance at his dependence. Nobita struggles with the prospect of Doraemon leaving, fearing an inability to function alone. He harbors a longstanding crush on Shizuka Minamoto, visiting her frequently and attempting to impress her with gadgets, sometimes resulting in accidental intrusions like walking in on her bathing, causing conflict. Their friendship gradually evolves, with Shizuka developing reciprocal feelings, culminating in their future marriage and son, Nobisuke. His interactions with Gian and Suneo are complex; frequently subjected to bullying and manipulation, moments of genuine cooperation, concern, and underlying friendship exist, particularly during larger adventures or crises against common threats. Jealousy characterizes his view of Hidetoshi Dekisugi due to Dekisugi's talents and closeness to Shizuka, though this rivalry lessens in adulthood.

In the episode "Boku no Umareta Hi", Nobita experiences significant emotional distress from low self-worth, developing a belief he was adopted due to feeling like a disappointment. Seeking reassurance, he and Doraemon use the Time Machine to travel back to his birth day. Witnessing the event, he observes his parents' joy and anticipation surrounding his arrival, countering his belief. This direct observation provides concrete evidence of his parents' love and desire for him at birth, offering temporary emotional relief from deep-seated insecurities about his family place.

Character development across the franchise shows Nobita's journey from chronic underachievement and dependence towards a more stable future facilitated by Doraemon. His initial future involved failure, marriage to Gian's sister, financial ruin, and descendant hardship. Doraemon's intervention alters this trajectory, leading to marriage with Shizuka and improved circumstances. While episodic narratives often reset progress, longer formats like films "Stand by Me Doraemon" and "Nobita's Great Adventure into the Underworld" depict gradual maturation. These show him confronting fears, taking responsibility, and demonstrating increased courage and self-belief amidst persistent self-doubt. His core traits of kindness and compassion remain consistent, forming the basis for heroic actions in saving others during critical adventures.
