Carrot is a hamster originating as Nils Holgersson's pet on his family's farm in southern Sweden. After Nils is magically shrunk by a tomte as punishment for mistreating animals, Carrot undergoes the same transformation and gains the ability to communicate with animals. Seeking revenge, the farm's previously tormented animals force Carrot to flee alongside Nils, escaping on the back of Morten the domestic goose as he joins a migrating flock of wild geese.
Carrot journeys across Sweden's provinces with Nils toward Lapland, serving as one of his closest companions. Throughout their adventures with the wild geese, Carrot provides unwavering emotional support and camaraderie. The character actively engages in challenges including aiding forest squirrels, evading the relentless fox Smirre, and assisting in the rescue of the eagle Gorgo. Carrot remains a steadfast presence during pivotal events like Gorgo's arrest and encounters with storms and floods.
This character does not appear in Selma Lagerlöf's original novel *The Wonderful Adventures of Nils*, being introduced solely for the anime adaptation. The name "Carrot" is used consistently in most references, though regional adaptations occasionally employ variations such as "Crumb."
