Description
Dr. Owen is a recurring character in the second season of the anime Dinosaur King. A professional paleontologist, he is a close colleague and good friend of Spike Taylor. His most significant role is as the adoptive father of Rex Owen, one of the main child characters. Dr. Owen discovered Rex as a baby, found in an egg-like container within a dinosaur exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History, and subsequently adopted him. Due to the demanding nature of his work as a traveling paleontologist and a desire to provide Rex with a more stable and normal family environment, Dr. Owen made the decision to send Rex to live with Spike Taylor and his family.

Throughout the anime, Dr. Owen is portrayed as a kind-hearted and dedicated parent, though his career often keeps him away from home. Despite his absence, he maintains a strong, loving bond with his adopted son and supports the D-Team's adventures. His background as a scientist is integral to his character, as he is a man of expertise and reason. In the second season, while the D-Team travels through time on their mission, Dr. Owen remains in the present day, staying with other adult allies like Reece, Laura, and Rod. He continues to use his knowledge of paleontology to aid the team when possible, and it was Dr. Owen who discovered the Dinosaur Cards for Ace the Carnotaurus and Paris the Parasaurolophus at a dig site in Alberta, Canada, which later became key partners for Rex and Zoe.

One of Dr. Owen's notable personal storylines in the second season involves his romantic feelings for Ursula, a member of the antagonistic Alpha Gang. He develops a persistent crush on her, which adds a layer of light-hearted complexity to his interactions with the main cast. This subplot culminates in a significant moment at the end of the episode titled Pterosaur Legends, where he once again asks Ursula to marry him, only to receive a negative reply. This recurring romantic pursuit highlights a more personal and somewhat vulnerable side to his character, showing his desire for companionship and to give his son a mother figure, even if his efforts are often unsuccessful. Dr. Owen's actions are ultimately motivated by a deep care for his family and a sense of responsibility, whether he is helping the D-Team with his dinosaur expertise or trying to build a more complete home life.
