Description
Rod is Dr. Z's grandson and Laura's older brother from the year 2127. He traveled with them aboard the Backlander timeship on a mission to rescue dinosaurs from extinction, unaware Dr. Z and Seth sabotaged the mission, causing a crash that stranded them in the present day alongside the Alpha Gang.
Rod exhibits high intelligence and mechanical expertise, frequently handling technology repairs and strategic planning. His skills surpass those of the Alpha Trio (Ursula, Zander, and Ed), though the robotic caretaker Helga often confines him and Laura to Zeta Point for studies. Physically, Rod has spiky black hair, tanned skin, and wears an aviator-style leather helmet with goggles, plus a belt bearing the Alpha Gang symbol.
Initially supporting Dr. Z's goal to capture dinosaur cards for world domination, Rod believed retrieving all cards was necessary to repair the timeship and return home. He occasionally participated in dinosaur battles, favoring Terry (a Pterosaur) or Spiny (a Spinosaurus), later deploying Ampelosaurus and Deinonychus. During Season 1, he and Laura uncovered Dr. Z's role in the timeship crash and Seth's betrayal, leading them to ally with the D-Team in the finale. Rod helped defeat the Black T. rex by coordinating a multi-dinosaur Super Fusion Move.
In Season 2 (*Mesozoic Meltdown*), Rod and Laura were accidentally left behind when Dr. Z reactivated the partially repaired Backlander. Stranded in the present, they assisted Reese Drake at the D-Lab until a temporal anomaly triggered a giant plant invasion that captured them. They were rescued when Chomp destroyed the plant's root system. Subsequently, they rejoined the Backlander crew as observers. When Seth seized control of the timeship, Rod helped Helga melt Seth's Gel Jarks using salt and retrieved six Cosmos Stones dropped during the struggle. Following the Dark Pterosaur's defeat, Rod departed for the future with the Alpha Gang, Ancients, and dinosaur cards aboard a commandeered Space Pirate ship.
Outside the anime, the manga depicts Rod with an Australian accent and colloquial speech (using terms like "bloke" and "reckon"). He wears a helmet with the Alpha symbol and a jacket tied around his waist. In one storyline, he battled Max but later expressed admiration for him. The DS game portrays Rod as a boss character specializing in Lightning-element dinosaurs like Torosaurus and Alpha Einiosaurus, mirroring Max Taylor's combat style in rashness and confidence.
