Description
Hinako is a young girl who serves as a key supporting character in the narrative. She is the younger sister of Koushi, and her fragile health is a primary driving force behind many of her brother's actions and decisions. Suffering from a chronic illness attributed to the pollution caused by factories in the Capital, her condition is precarious and requires constant medical attention. Following the death of their mother, Koushi accepts an offer from the factory owner Yuoshichi Okibi, which results in them moving into the Okibi household. In this arrangement, the family doctor, Takimi, is tasked with providing ongoing medical care for Hinako. This situation forms a crucial agreement, as Koushi’s cooperation with Yuoshichi, specifically his research to enhance bottled lightning and harness skyfire, is largely done to secure his sister’s treatment and well-being. Hinako is also waiting for the return of her father, who is a Fire Hunter, and his hunting dog, Kanata, showing her deep connection to her family even when apart from them.
In terms of personality, Hinako is shown to have a strong emotional bond with Kanata, expressing ecstatic joy upon the hound's return. Her character is defined not by overt action but by a quiet endurance, as she spends much of her time waiting and coping with her illness. She is not portrayed as a fighter or a traveller, but as a child whose world is largely confined by her health and the protective, if morally ambiguous, environment created by her brother and Yuoshichi.
Her role in the story is that of a motivator for Koushi and a mysterious figure whose medical treatment hints at larger conspiracies. The nature of her illness and its treatment become central to the story’s mystery. There are strong suspicions that her care is not straightforward; the doctor’s observational treatment and her sudden fever, accompanied by an abnormal change in the color of her eyes, suggest that something far more complex is at play. Her eyes have been seen to change from their normal color to an unnatural yellow with orange irises, and she has entered a feral, acrobatic state, bouncing off walls and escaping into the night. This transformation is treated as a form of demonic possession or an awakening. These episodes are directly linked to the "heavenly fire" treatments she is receiving, implying that Yuoshichi and the doctor are conducting experiments to make her fire-resistant, similar to the fearsome creatures known as Spiders. In a broader context, it is revealed that her survival and the changes she undergoes depend on experimental interventions by the doctor and the Water Clan, with the goal of adapting human resilience. She is even described as an ideal specimen created for the future of humanity, suggesting a pivotal role in the world's fate.
Her key relationships are central to her identity. Her bond with her brother, Koushi, is the most significant, as her illness dictates his life's work and moral compromises. She shares a warm connection with the hunting dog Kanata, whose return brings her great happiness. The nature of her relationship with Yuoshichi and Doctor Takimi is more transactional and ominous, as they are the architects of her care and also the ones conducting unsettling experiments upon her.
Hinako undergoes notable development, shifting from a passive, ill child into a figure of supernatural potential. Her transformation into a feral, powerful being with glowing eyes marks a significant change in her status from a victim to an active, if uncontrolled, agent. These changes, combined with the revelation that she may be connected to the Flickering Flame, a spirit of a god reborn in human form, suggest that she is far more than just a sick girl and is instead a crucial piece of the world's impending crisis. Her abilities are largely latent or uncontrolled, manifesting as incredible acrobatic agility and enhanced physical prowess during her feral episodes. The treatments she undergoes are designed to grant her fire resistance, a notable ability in a world ravaged by fire. Her changing eye color and connection to divine elements point to powers that are just beginning to emerge.
