Description
Maho Misawa is a central character in the basketball anime Ro-Kyu-Bu! SS, known for being the energetic and impulsive heart of her team. As a sixth-grade student at Keishin Academy, she stands 145 centimeters tall with distinct blonde hair styled into two long pigtails and blue eyes, often depicted with a small, cat-like fang that adds to her lively appearance. Her family is notably wealthy; her father, Fuga Misawa, is a successful designer who runs a large company, and she lives in a large mansion with her parents and their maid, Hijiri Kuina.
Maho acts as the self-appointed "atmosphere maker" of the girls' basketball team, a role she fills with an overwhelming amount of energy and enthusiasm. Her personality is outgoing, happy-go-lucky, and often reckless, leading her to come up with wild ideas that frequently embarrass her more reserved teammates. Despite her sometimes self-centered and impulsive nature, she is deeply caring and will not hesitate to stand up for her friends when they need defending. One of her most prominent quirks is giving nicknames to everyone she meets, often by adding an "n" sound to the end of their names. For example, she calls her coach Subaru Hasegawa "Subarun". Her homeroom teacher nicknamed her "Fireworks" because of her hyperactive and explosive personality.
The story of the basketball club begins with Maho. After witnessing Tomoka Minato's impressive basketball skills during a physical education class, Maho became determined to form a girls' basketball team. She was the first to befriend the shy Tomoka and took the initiative to recruit Saki Nagatsuka, Hinata Hakamada, and Airi Kashii, laying the groundwork for the team that the series follows. Her motivation for playing basketball evolved from a simple fascination into a genuine and deep devotion. A natural genius capable of learning new skills very quickly, Maho had a history of losing interest in activities once she mastered them, leading to a rift with her childhood friend, Natsuhi Takenaka. However, basketball became the first thing she truly committed to, and she works hard to improve for the sake of her team, proving her dedication and healing her relationship with Natsuhi.
On the court, Maho plays as a power forward and wears jersey number 5. While not as naturally skilled as Tomoka, she boasts exceptional physical abilities, particularly in lateral speed and leaping, which makes her a formidable offensive player, especially at jump shots. She is a key component of the team's "One-Center Four-Shooter Offense," a strategy that relies on her shooting skills to capitalize on open opportunities. While her focus can sometimes wander during games, she has shown significant growth in her defensive capabilities, notably managing to shut down a powerful opponent, Rena Ashihara, for an entire quarter during a national tournament match. Beyond her athletic talents, Maho is also skilled at tennis and enjoys playing video games. Despite her bold and often fearless demeanor, she has a notable weakness: a strong fear of the dark and frightening things like ghosts.
